Villanova extended its win streak to four straight games with today's 3-2 victory. The last three games in the streak have all ended with a 3-2 score and all four victories have been by a one-goal margin. Despite the close games the Wildcats have trailed just once during the streak and even that one deficit lasted for only 59 seconds.
Today's win was the 14th time in school history that Villanova has won a game in double overtime or later. The team is 13-6-60 (.544) all-time in games that go to two overtime periods and the Wildcats have now won at least one game in double overtime in each of the last six seasons.
Villanova continued its incredible success in regular season tournaments with today's victory. Since the 2005 season the Wildcats are now 18-2-2 (.864) in regular season tournaments. This is also the second straight season that Villanova has produced a tournament victory over VCU. The teams met last season in the first round of the JMU/Comfort Inn Harrisonburg Invitational and the Wildcats won that meeting by a final score of 2-1.
Three of the five games Villanova has played this season have been against members of the Colonial Athletic Association. The win over the Rams today makes the Wildcats 18-23-4 (.444) all-time against the teams that currently make up the CAA, although more recently Villanova is 7-1-1 (.833) against the CAA since the start of the 2004 season.
The Wildcats play a fourth CAA squad on Sunday when they face this weekend's tournament host, William & Mary. Villanova and the Tribe played each other in four straight seasons from 1988-91 but have not met since. William & Mary won each of those four previous meetings.
Senior forward Katie Ryan (Wayne, N.J.) scored the 14th game-winning goal of her career today and in doing so tied the Wildcats all-time record for game-winners. Ryan has three game-winning goals this season and has netted the game-winner in each of the last two games. She is tied for the school record with Ann Brennan (1983-86) and Cathy Ford (1983-85), who were each a part of the inaugural varsity Villanova women's soccer team back in 1983.
Katie Ryan has now scored one goal in each of the first five games this season. She also scored a goal in the final game last season and has thus extended her streak of consecutive games with a goal scored to six in a row. This is the longest streak of Ryan's career, surpassing four-game streaks she had as a freshman in 2008 and a sophomore in 2009.
