DADE CITY, Fla. - Villanova junior Michael Kania sits in a tie for twelfth place after two rounds of the 54-hole USF Invitational being played at the par-72 Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club. As a team, Villanova was five shots better (299-294--593; +17) in the second round, but fell in the standings to 12th out of 17 overall. However, Villanova trails 7th place Louisville by just five shots as the middle of the field is separated by just a few shots.
Kania leads the Wildcats after shooting a 71-73--144 (E) through the first two rounds. In round two, Kania was very steady with 15 pars, one birdie and two bogies. The junior trails the fourth place golfer by just four strokes and sits seven strokes behind Louisville's Justin Dorward, who is the leader with 18 holes to play.
Junior Steve Skurla comes in next for the Wildcats in a tie for 39th with a 76-73--149 (+5). Skurla had three birdies and four bogeys on the day for a solid +1 round.
Senior Brian Colbert is in a tie for 43rd after shooting back-to-back 75s for a 150 (+6). The senior had two birdies in his second round.
Juniors Derek Jones (84-73--157; +13) and Jimmy Johnston (77-80--157; +13) are both tied for 78th and each birdied four holes on day two.
Villanova leads other BIG EAST foes DePaul, Marquette, and Cincinnati in the standings, but everyone is chasing UCF (569; -7) who leads the entire field.
The USF Invitational with conclude tomorrow with round three play getting underway in the morning.
