LONDON - Former Villanova men's basketball player Andrew Sullivan started his second straight game in the Olympics on Tuesday afternoon. Sullivan and host Great Britain were defeated in a narrow back-and-forth game against Brazil, falling by a final score of 67-62.
Sullivan played 15 minutes against Brazil and finished with two points, two rebounds and one steal. He made the only shot from the field he attempted during the game, a layup off a feed from Luol Deng midway through the second quarter which put Great Britain ahead 20-15.
Neither team got off to a good start offensively but Great Britain was particularly strong on the defensive end in the first 10 minutes, holding Brazil to 2-of-20 shooting from the field while pulling out to an 11-4 lead at the end of the first period. The teams were tied 27-27 at halftime.
In the fourth quarter Deng hit a three-pointer to put Great Britain ahead for the final time, 57-56 with 4:02 remaining. Following a timeout, however, Tiago Splitter made a layup to give Brazil a 58-57 lead. Those were the first points in a 7-0 run which made the score 63-57 with just 1:32 left.
Great Britain next faces Spain on Thursday evening with an 8 p.m. tip-off in London (3 p.m. Eastern time).
Next up for Villanova is a women's basketball game on Wednesday at 8 p.m. local time (3 p.m. Eastern) when Lisa Karcic and Croatia face the Czech Republic.
