LONDON - Lisa Karcic and Croatia played a much closer game than the final score indicated against Czech Republic on Wednesday evening in Group A women's basketball action but were defeated by a final score of 89-70.
Karcic came off the bench and saw three minutes of action in the game, which Croatia led 60-57 after the first three quarters of play. Czech Republic went on a 16-2 run in the first 4:04 of the final period to open a 73-62 lead with 5:56 left and wound up with a 32-10 scoring margin in the fourth quarter.
The game had big runs both ways. Czech Republic led 45-39 at halftime and extended that lead to a 52-41 margin with 7:51 to play in the third quarter. From that point until the end of the period however, Croatia used a 19-5 run to end the quarter with a three-point lead, 60-57.
Croatia will look for its first win in group play when it takes on Angola on Friday morning at 4 a.m. Eastern time (9 a.m. local time in London).
On Thursday afternoon the Great Britain men's basketball team takes on Spain in the continuation of Group B round-ropin play.
