NEW YORK--Senior Samuel Ellison (Dresher, Pa.) and redshirt freshman Josh Lampron (Mansfield, Mass.) each set personal bests in the 1000 meters and Villanova returned to action by competing in 11 events at the Gotham Cup on Friday afternoon. The meet was the first of three straight at the New York Armory for the Wildcats and today's date marked the 100th anniversary to the day of the first track meet held at the famed New York venue. Villanova had 21 athletes in competition during the meet.
Ellison and Lampron comfortably finished first and second in the 1000 meters to pace a field of 47 runners. Ellison crossed the finish line first in 2:27.05 and Lampron was on his heels in 2:27.06. The previous personal best in the event for Ellison was set at the same meet two years ago. Graduate student Mike Palmisano (Dresher, Pa.) also ran in the 1000 meters and came in eighth with a time of 2:30.55.
Despite how early in the season it is the Wildcats still demonstrated their strength in the middle distance events. In addition to the 1000 meters Villanova also scored a win in the 4x800 meter relay, where its time of 7:48.94 led a field of 11 teams. The winning margin for the Wildcats was nearly 14 seconds over Fordham and the rest of the field.
Juniors Charlie Bates (Hoboken, N.J.) and Chris Pietrocarlo (Hampstead, N.H.) each ran the Mile and finished third and 12th, respectively. Bates crossed the finish line with a time of 4:15.78 and Pietrocarlo recorded a time of 4:23.41.
In the individual sprint events the top result for Villanova came from freshman Peter Winslow (Stratham, N.H.), who came in 14th in the 500 meters with a time of 1:05.94. He was running the event for the first time after making his collegiate debut in the 1000 meters last month. Winslow also ran a leg on the 4x400 meter relay squad that finished sixth with a time of 3:18.84.
Freshman Kyle Cartwright (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and sophomore Joseph Messick (Montgomery, N.J.) came in 21st (50.96) and 36th (52.16), respectively, in the 400 meters and sophomore Aaron Sandifer (Harrisburg, N.C.) finished 25th in the preliminaries of the 60 meter hurdles (8.84).
Rounding out the meet for the Wildcats were five athletes that competed in four field events. Junior Elbert Maxwell (Pittsburgh, Pa.) came in third in the high jump (2.04m) and seventh in the long jump (7.07m). He was joined in the long jump by freshman Danny Jackson (Mechanicsburg, Pa.), who placed 44th with a distance of 5.69 meters. Freshman Denis Ostick (Havertown, Pa.) competed in the triple jump and came in 16th (12.80m).
Junior Chris Dougherty (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and freshman PJ Succi (Warminster, Pa.) each competed in the pole vault. Dougherty came in seventh place out of 18 competitors by clearing a height of 4.45 meters. Succi tied for 10th place (4.15m).
Villanova returns to action at the Armory next Friday for the Great Dane Classic.
