CHESTER, Pa. - Junior Elbert Maxwell (Pittsburgh, Pa.) finished first in the high jump and Villanova had a group of seven runners run well in the 1500 meters as the Danny Curran Invitational concluded at Leslie C. Quick, Jr. Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Junior Charlie Bates (Hoboken, N.J.) led the Wildcats charge in the 1500 meters with a second place finish.
Maxwell cleared a height of 1.98 meters in the high jump to lead a field of 12 athletes. In the long jump freshman PJ Succi (Warminster, Pa.) and sophomore Robert Cacace (Yonkers, N.Y.) placed sixth and 15th, respectively. Succi recorded a jump of 5.89 meters and Cacace had a mark of 5.65 meters.
In the 1500 meters Bates was the runner-up out of 52 competitors with a time of 3:55.67 and Villanova accounted for four of the top six overall finishers. Junior Brian Basili (South Orange, N.J.) was on Bates' heels in third place and crossed the finish line in 3:55.81, while junior Chris O'Sullivan (Havertown, Pa.) and redshirt freshman Kevin Corbusier (Monkton, Md.) placed fifth (3:56.64) and sixth (3:57.74), respectively.
Rounding out the group of Wildcats in the 1500 meters was sophomore Tom Trainer (Havertown, Pa.) in 10th place (3:59.03), junior Chris Pietrocarlo (Hampstead, N.H.) in 26th place (4:13.32) and redshirt freshman Kieran Brennan (Pearl River, N.Y.) in 33rd place (4:15.88).
Freshman Vince Thompson (Pipersville, Pa.) ran for Villanova in the 100 meters and came in sixth out of 47 entries with a personal best time of 11.60.
In the throws sophomore James Rowen (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) competed in both the shot put and the hammer. He set a personal best in the hammer with a distance of 46.25 meters and came in fourth overall out of 19 competitors. Rowen also finished eighth in the shot put and threw for a distance of 12.45 meters.
Senior Drew King (New Haven, Conn.) and freshman John McDonald (New Providence, N.J.) came in fifth (44.69m) and 13th (34.58m), respectively, in the hammer. Freshman Dan Sullivan (North Hampton, N.H.) placed 11th in the shot put (12.25m).
