WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Junior Elbert Maxwell (Pittsburgh, Pa.) produced excellent results in the long jump and the high jump as Villanova began two days of competition at the Colonial Relays on Friday. The majority of individuals events in the meet were contested on Friday, with additional races and the relays coming up tomorrow.
Maxwell competed in the Championship sections of both the long jump and the high jump. He won the long jump and his winning distance of 7.46 meters is a familiar mark. It not only ties the previous career best for Maxwell but also matches his effort from the indoor season when Maxwell became the first athlete in Wildcats history to win the long jump at the conference level.
Freshman PJ Succi (Warminster, Pa.) and sophomore Robert Cacace (Yonkers, N.Y.) each registered personal bests in the University section of the long jump. Succi had a jump of 6.17 meters to finish 19th in his section of the long jump, while Cacace was 23rd with a mark of 5.92 meters.
In the high jump, Maxwell was the runner-up out of 13 competitors with a mark of 2.09 meters, while junior Matthew Sidney (Canton, Mass.) was fifth and cleared a height of 1.94 meters.
Among the noteworthy results from the running events on Friday were personal best times for freshman Vince Thompson (Pipersville, Pa.) and redshirt freshman Harry Warnick (Fairfield, Conn.). Thompson posted a time of 11.30 in the preliminaries if the 100 meters, while Warnick was 20th in the 1500 meters and crossed the finish line in 3:54.61.
Warnick was followed in the University section of the 1500 meters by juniors Chris O'Sullivan (Havertown, Pa.) and Charlie Bates (Hoboken, N.J.) in 27th place (3:55.64) and 55th place (4:03.43), respectively.
Other strong performances on Friday came from juniors Bryan Murphy (Teaneck, N.J.) and Brian Basili (South Orange, N.J.) in the 400 meters and the 5000 meters, respectively. Murphy placed seventh in the 400 meters (48.62) and Basili came in ninth in the University section of the 5000 meters in 14:29.08.
