RADFORD, Va. - The Villanova women's soccer team picked up their first win of the 2014 season with a 1-0 defeat of Radford on Friday evening. Sophomore
Katie Martin (Dallas, Texas) capitalized on a quick restart in the 53rd minute for her first goal of the year to help lead the Wildcats to victory.
Friday night's game marked the first of a two-game road trip to Virginia over Labor Day Weekend. Villanova will return to action on Sunday when they face No. 3 Virginia in Charlottesville, Va.
Following a Highlander foul, Martin took a quick shot from 20 yards out at the 53:13 mark to beat Radford goalkeeper Katie McCormick and give Villanova a 1-0 lead. Villanova sophomore goalkeeper Emma Meyer (Massapequa, N.Y.) helped preserve the Wildcat score with a terrific save punched over the crossbar in the 61st minute. The play would help Villanova to their first win of the season as the `Cats improved to 1-1-0 overall on the year. With the loss, Radford falls to 0-2-0.
Villanova dominated the match and outshot their opponents by an 8-2 margin in the first half and 14-7 overall for the contest. They also held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks. Freshman Amanda Vocelka (Atlanta, Ga.) and senior Caitlin Forte (Selbyville, Del.) led the team with four shots each while Meyer finished the match with one save.
The Wildcats will conclude their away weekend on Sunday, August 31st when they take on the No. 3 ranked Virginia Cavaliers. Game time is slated for 2 p.m.
