Talley Speaks at Weekly Media Press Conference

Oct. 14, 2015

VILLANOVA, Pa.- Villanova head football coach Andy Talley spoke to the media at his weekly press conference Wednesday afternoon.

Talley touched on Saturday's loss against William and Mary, what needs to be done to improve team play overall, and their upcoming game against Albany.

Below are excerpts from his press conference.

Talley on the William and Mary game:

"We ran up against a very good William and Mary team on Saturday. Our tackling broke down in the game. They have two very good running backs [Mikal Abdul-Sabor and Kendell Anderson]. I would say maybe the two best in our league along with Darius Victor down in Towson. We had 19 missed tackles. When you're tackling that poorly you're going to have problems. We were 1-12 on third down. William and Mary was 50 percent [8-16] on third downs against us. We're not playing great defense right now, but we are not protecting our defense at all because of our lack of offense."

Talley on the William and Mary game part 2:

"Kendell Anderson broke a long run for a touchdown. Towards the end of the first half William and Mary threw a ball down the middle, our two guys collided, and they went in and scored. We kind of gave them two cheap ones. We played well for about one quarter and maybe a half of a quarter then we broke down in the second quarter. William and Mary is a good team."

Talley on Villanova's play right now:

"We are not a very good football team right now. We need to continue to work on our game plan. We need to change a few things around offensively. I think now that we have seen Zach [Bednarczyk] it's probably time to dumb it down a bit offensively. We need to see if we can go in with a more fundamental base to give Zach some confidence to run and throw the football. The injuries have not allowed us to have any symmetry offensively. We have not been able to come together."

Talley on Villanova's play right now part 2:

"This team has not found an identity yet. You can talk about not having John Robertson. Yes, we lost a great player, but he's not there anymore. Candidly, we have not done a good job yet of overcoming his loss. I think that's as big of a problem as any that we have had given the fact that we are stuck at 2-3. Hopefully, Zach can step up his game and we can help him by having a better running game. Usually, when you can run the ball you can throw it a little bit better."

Talley on practices this week and building momentum:

"Practices have been good. They have been spirited. You can only lose so many games, and we have lost two in row now. That's why I think this game is critical for us to make sure that we have something to build on. If we can get to the Richmond and JMU games with a few more wins I'll take my chances. Right now, we are just trying to get the pieces put together."

Talley on hitting the road this weekend:

"I like the fact that we are going to get out of Villanova, get on the road, and change the scenery to see if we can get this team over the hump. I think if we can get a win Saturday then I think we'll have a little better sailing down the road. I'm hoping we can ignite this thing and finally get it going."
