MALVERN, Pa. - The Villanova men's golf team opened play at the fifth-annual Wildcat Invitational on Monday and are currently in sixth place after the first set of 18 holes. Villanova finished the day with a team score of 304 (+20), which puts them 10 strokes off the lead. The 16-team, Villanova-hosted event is scheduled to restart tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. for the final round with all players going off the first tee.

The Wildcats braved strong winds and cold temperatures in the late afternoon today at White Manor Country Club, the par 71 course which stretches 7055 yards.

Led by sophomore Lucas Trim, Villanova is within striking distance for a top finish at the event. Trim went one over on the front nine with a birdie on the par 4 seventh hole and performed even better on the back, going one under to finish with an even 71 in round one. His birdie on the back came on number 16, the 446 yard par four. The sophomore went two under on the final 13 holes of the day.

Including Trim's total, there were three rounds of 71 on the day, the other two coming from Drexel's Christopher Crawford, last year's medalist, and Delaware's Jack Gianinny. Binghamton's Josh Holling was the only individual in the red as he finished with a one-under 70.

Freshman Zach Egermayer closed the day at +5 (76) to finish with the second-best Wildcat total. Egermayer went two over on the front nine with a birdie on hole seven followed by three over on the back. Individually, the freshman ranks tied for 20th in the 95-man field.

Junior Luke Waggoner came in third for the Wildcats at 78 (+7). The junior went five over on the front, but made up for it on the back going two-over 38 with a birdie on the par five 17th hole.

Freshman Andy Butler carded a round of 79 (+8) on Monday to round out the top-four counted scores for the Wildcats. Butler bogeyed the first three of four hole but settled down with eight-straight pars. A minor hiccup on hole 13 caused the freshman to go five over on the backside to finish 38-41--79.

Senior Scott Miller got off the a bumpy start on the front nine, but wound up shooting +2 on the back to finish with a round-one total of 88 (+17) as the fifth scorer for Villanova.

Freshmen Will Byrne and Andrew MacMillan along with senior Ted Brennan each competed as individuals at the event.

Brennan had the best day of the three, shooting 83 (+12) with eight pars.

MacMillan went four over on the front nine but ten over on the back to finish the day at +14 (85).

Byrne went 44-42 for a Monday card of 86 (+15).

Between the eight student-athletes completing for the Wildcats, the team combined to play 144 holes in round one. The group finished with five birdies, two coming from Trim while the others came from Egermayer and Waggoner. Villanova also finished with 80 pars in the remaining 139 holes.

Delaware leads the event at 294 (+10) followed by Saint Joseph's (295, +11), Drexel (297, +13), Binghamton (300, +16) and La Salle (301, +17) to round of the top five.

After Villanova (304, +20) in sixth, Lafayette and Central Connecticut State sit tied for seventh at 305 (+21). Rider and Lehigh are then tied in ninth place at 207 (+23).

Wagner (311, +27), Monmouth (314, +20), Fordham (315, +31), Bucknell (320, +36), Manhattan (325, +41) and Canisius (326, +42) round out the 16-team event.
