UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Two days of competition began on Friday at the Penn State National and Villanova competed in six events as it got underway at the meet. Senior distance runner Robert Hurlbut (Rochester, N.Y.) was the runner-up in the invitational section of the 5000 meters to highlight the day's results at Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track. Other events for the Wildcats on Friday included the 60 meters, the distance medley relay, the pole vault, the long jump and the first four events of the heptathlon.

Hurlbut came in second out of 13 runners with a time of 14:31.00 in the 5000 meters. He was running his second race of the season after previously competing in the 3000 meters at the Great Dane Classic two weeks ago. Hurlbut ran a steady race and finished just over two seconds off the winning pace.

Freshman Sterling Pierce (Voorhees, N.J.) competed in the 60 meters and finished fifth in his preliminary heat with a time of 6.98. This is the second time this season that Pierce has come in under seven seconds in the 60 meters. He previously recorded a time of 6.95 in the preliminaries of the event at the Villanova Open earlier this month.

Villanova recorded a time of 9:44.75 in the invitational section of the distance medley relay. Sophomore Elliot Slade (Cardiff, United Kingdom) led off the relay and was followed by juniors Kyle Cartwright (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and Josh Lampron (Mansfield, Mass.) on the middle two legs of the race. Junior Ben Malone (River Vale, N.J.) ran the anchor of the relay as the team continues to build towards its biggest meets of the season.

Sophomore James Deutmeyer (Rye, N.Y.) had a strong performance in the pole vault and cleared the bar at 4.77 meters. That mark is the best indoor performance of his collegiate career and surpasses the height of 4.70 meters that he recorded twice last season. Deutmeyer's collegiate best mark in the pole vault is 4.85 meters from the 2015 outdoor campaign. He came in eighth out of 12 competitors on Friday evening.

Freshman Pearson Feagans (Dallas, Texas) also competed on Friday night and placed 14th in the long jump with a mark of 6.82 meters.

The first four events of the heptathlon took place earlier on Friday and junior PJ Succi (Warminster, Pa.) totaled 1,704 points for the day. He registered a personal best mark of 10.47 meters in the shot put and also tallied marks of 7.59 in the 60 meters and 5.62 meters in the long jump.

The majority of events at the Penn State National will take place throughout the day on Saturday, including the competitive invitational sections of the running events. The top races involving the Wildcats to keep an eye out for on Saturday are the invitational sections of the 800 meters, the 1000 meters, the Mile and the 3000 meters. The latter race will feature the season debuts of senior distance runners and 2015 All-Americans Rob Denault (Aurora, Ont.) and Jordy Williamsz (Melbourne, Australia).
