STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Junior middle distance runner Ben Malone (River Vale, N.J.) and freshman jumper Pearson Feagans (Dallas, Texas) each registered victories during competition at the Villanova Open on Friday afternoon. The meet marked the Wildcats debut at the brand new Ocean Breeze Track & Field Athletic Complex in Staten Island and also was the first of six times that Villanova will compete at the venue this season.

Malone raced to a win in the 3000 meters while racing in the event for the first time as a collegian. He paced a field of 34 runners to earn the win and crossed the finish line with a time of 8:33.60. Feagans was the winner of the long jump with a distance of 7.04 meters, just off his personal best mark in that event. Feagans headlined a field of 27 athletes who competed in the long jump. In all, the Wildcats had athletes competing in six running events, four field events and the 4x400 meter relay during the meet.

There were a number of new personal bests established on Friday afternoon, including from freshman Sterling Pierce (Voorhees, N.J.) and senior Donald Urschel (East Brunswick, N.J.) in the 60 meters. They each advanced to the final of the event by recording new top times in the preliminary heats. Pierce was sixth overall out of 45 competitors in the preliminaries with a time of 6.95 and Urschel came in eighth with a mark of 6.99. They went on to post matching times of 7.03 in the final and placed seventh and eighth, respectively.

Other strong performances in the running events included junior Peter Winslow (Stratham, N.H.) finishing third in the 800 meters and classmate Kyle Cartwright (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) placing seventh in the 400 meters. Winslow registered a time of 1:58.08 in his race, while Cartwright nearly matched his personal best in the 400 meters with a time of 49.81.

In the field events, sophomore John McDonald (New Providence, N.J.) was the runner-up out of 16 competitors in the weight throw. He threw for a distance of 14.93 meters and eclipsed the mark of 14.62 meters that he established at the Jack Pyrah Invitational earlier this season.

Villanova returns to action, and to Ocean Breeze, next weekend to compete in the Gotham Cup.
