Christiansburg, Va. - The Villanova swimming and diving teams concluded the Hokie Fall Invitational on Saturday evening at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center. The women's team took fourth place with a score of 493.50, while the men's team totaled 154.50 points to take seventh. Virginia Tech, the host of the meet, swept the women's and men's titles.
The women's 1650-yard freestyle kicked off the final set of events at the meet. Villanova's Emily Mayo placed fourth in the event with a time of 16:46.00. Teammate Caitlin Daday was not far behind, as she touched the wall at 16:54.63 to take eighth place.
In the men's 1650-yard freestyle, Harrison Rodts was the top Villanova finisher with a time of 16.12.31, and he placed 15th for his efforts. Darby Goodwin finished in fourth place in the women's 200-yard back, touching the wall at 1:59.19, which is an NCAA "B" cut qualifying time.
The men's 200-yard back saw Justin Cucchi take the top spot in the "C" final with a personal-best time of 1:48.95, more than five seconds faster than his previous best.
Alexa Fabbri continued her strong start to the season in the free events, as she took fourth place in the women's 100-yard free, touching the wall at 50.55. Jake Hoin followed up that performance with a sixth place finish in the men's 100-yard free with a time of 45.67, just .23 seconds off his personal-best time.
Brooke Bruno and Heather Farley took 10th and 11th place in the women's 200-yard breaststroke finals, respectively. Bruno clocked in at 2:19.90, and Farley touched the wall at 2:20.57.
In the women's 200-yard fly, Christine Sullivan earned a sixth place finish with her time of 2:02.56. Mackenzie Niness also swam in the event, taking ninth place by winning the "B" final. On the men's side of the event, Jade Rice touched the wall at 1:52.86 to finish in 13th place.
The final events of the meet were the women's and men's 400-free relays. Villanova's team of Goodwin, Mayo, Taylor Wilson and Fabbri raced to a third place finish in the women's event with time of 3:23.67.
Stephen Krecsmar, John Paul Naughton, Christopher Paynter and Hoin concluded the meet with a ninth place finish in the men's 400-free relay. Hoin touched the wall at 3:05.23 to give Villanova the top time in the BIG EAST on the season.
