Omaha, Neb. ââ'¬" The Villanova Wildcats traveled to Omaha, Neb., on Tuesday night where they fell to the Creighton Bluejays by a score of 60-46. With the loss, Villanova falls to 6-9 overall and 2-3 in Big East play, while Creighton improves to 11-5 overall and 5-1 in conference action.
The first quarter went back and forth before Creighton would take a 12-11 lead after one. Villanova was 4-of-14 from the field for 28.6 percent in the opening quarter, while the Bluejays were 6-of-12 for 50.0 percent.
Villanova senior forward Jordan Dillard opened the second quarter scoring by draining a three-ball from the corner to give the Wildcats a 14-12 advantage. Creighton would then use a 9-3 run to open up a 21-17 lead midway through the quarter. Bluejay center Brianna Rollerson was effective in the paint during the stretch with four points.
The teams traded lay-ups on their next possessions with redshirt freshman Bridget Herlihy scoring for Villanova and Sydney Lamberty for Creighton. After Lamberty's bucket gave the Bluejays a 23-19 lead, Wildcat freshman guard Kelly Jekot made it a one point game at 23-22 when she connected on a three-point field goal. Villanova would take the lead at 24-23 at the 2:56 mark when junior center Megan Quinn buried a 10-foot jump shot.
Following a Marissa Janning jumper that put the Bluejays back in front at 25-24, the Wildcats scored the final three points of the half to grab a 27-25 halftime advantage. The Villanova points included a lay-up by Herlihy and a foul shot by senior forward Samantha Wilkes.
Creighton started the second half on an 8-0 run to take a 34-27 lead with four different Bluejays scoring on the first four possessions of the third quarter. Villanova responded with a 9-3 spurt of its own to slice the Creighton lead to 37-36. Wilkes scored seven of her team's nine points on two three-pointers and a free throw.
Leading 37-36 with 3:26 remaining in the third, Creighton closed the quarter on a 9-0 run to grab a 46-36 advantage entering the fourth and final quarter. Senior guard Marissa Janning was dominant in the Creighton run scoring the last six points.
The Bluejays would use the momentum of the third quarter run to propel them to the 60-46 victory.
In the loss, Quinn led the Wildcats with 13 points, six rebounds and three blocks, while Wilkes scored a season-high 11 points to go with four assists and three steals.
Creighton was paced by Janning who had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Lamberty and Rollerson added 11 points each.
For the game, the Wildcats were 16-of-59 from the field (27.1%), 7-of-22 from three-point range (31.8%) and 7-of-10 from the foul line (70.0%), while the Bluejays shot 25-of-51 from the floor (49.0%), 4-of-12 from long distance (33.3%) and 6-of-7 from the charity stripe (85.7%). Creighton owned a 44-26 advantage on the backboards. Villanova was charged with just two turnovers in the game.
Villanova returns to action on Friday, Jan. 13, when the Wildcats play host to the Seton Hall Pirates. Tip-off at The Pavilion is set for 11:30 a.m.
