Villanova, Pa. - The Villanova men's swimming and diving team began 2017 on the right track, claiming the top spot in nine events against the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) on Tuesday afternoon. The Wildcats won the meet by a final score of 126-74.
The 200-yard medley relay started the contest with Villanova's team of Andrew Kelley, Tyler Nussbaum, Jake Hoin and Christopher Paynter touching the wall first in a time of 1:34.79.
Justin Cucchi, Ian Kleinsmith, Jade Rice and Stephen Krecsmar were part of a third place effort in the event.
In the 1000-yard freestyle, John Davidson and Harrison Rodts took the top two spots with times of 10:06.84 and 10:09.87, respectively. Noah Chernik placed fourth, clocking in at 10:22.69.
Krecsmar and John Paul Naughton finished in first and second place in the 200-yard freestyle with times of 1:44.83 and 1:44.94, respectively. Greg Cino took fourth place, touching the wall at 1:51.89.
Hoin won the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly races with times of 21.60 and 50.71. Luke Sabal and Rice finished just behind Hoin in the 100-yard butterfly, taking second and third place, respectively.
The 100-yard freestyle saw Krecsmar and Paynter place first and second with times of 47.99 and 48.71, respectively.
Kelley continued his strong season in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing in first place with a time of 51.64. Chernik was not far behind, as he took third place when he clocked in at 54.37.
In the 500-yard freestyle, Naughton grabbed the top spot in a time of 4:50.16. Davidson placed third with a time of 4:56.95.
