ALLENTOWN, Pa. - In women's basketball action on Friday evening, the Villanova Wildcats registered a 62-42 win over the Lehigh Mountain Hawks in a game played at the PPL Center in Allentown, Pa. With the victory, Villanova improves to 2-0 on the season, while Lehigh falls to 1-2 on the year.
After a cold shooting to start to the game, Villanova outscored the Mountain Hawks by an 11-5 margin over the final 5:18 to lead 14-7 after one quarter. Sophomore forward Mary Gedaka led the Wildcat charge with three field goals. The other five points included a deep three by senior guard Alex Louin and a lay-up by junior guard Adrianna Hahn.
A 10-foot jumper by sophomore guard Kelly Jekot and a Gedaka lay-up helped Villanova open a double digit lead at 18-7. Following five straight points by Lehigh, Villanova responded with a 7-2 spurt to go back up double digits at 25-14 with 3:34 left in the second quarter. Hahn buried a three ball and scored on a running lay-up to account for five of the seven points.
The Wildcats would go to halftime with a 30-16 lead. Defense was the highlight for Villanova in the first half, as the Wildcats held Lehigh to 16.0 percent shooting on a 4-of-25 effort from the field and a 2-of-8 performance from three-point range.
Villanova started the third quarter on a 14-2 run to take a commanding 44-18 advantage at the 3:46 mark. Jekot kick started the run by scoring the first five points on a pull-up jumper and a three-ball. Junior forward Jannah Tucker added two trifectas in the spurt.
In the win, Gedaka and Hahn scored 13 points each. Hahn had a team-high tying seven rebounds, while Gedaka pulled-down six caroms. Gedaka was a perfect 6-of-6 from the field. Jekot chipped in with nine points and six rebounds.
Lehigh was paced by Cameryn Benz with 14 points and seven rebounds. She was the only Mountain Hawk in double figures.
For the game, Villanova was 22-of-69 from the field (31.9%), 7-of-37 from three-point range (18.9%) and 11-of-13 from the foul line (84.6%), while Lehigh shot 23.0 percent from the floor (14-of-61), 22.2 percent from behind the arc (4-of-18) and 71.4 percent from the charity stripe (10-of-14). Each team was credited with 48 rebounds. Villanova was charged with just seven turnovers.
Villanova returns to action on Sunday, Nov. 19, when the Wildcats play host to the No. 11 Duke Blue Devils in the home opener at the Jake Nevin Field House.
