EAST MEADOW, N.Y. -
The Villanova swimming and diving program continued its momentum from Wednesday with impressive performances in the finals events on Thursday. The Wildcats broke five school records and took first place in six events.

"Our athletes did a great job of carrying over the energy from last night into today. Once again, we had historic performances," said head coach Rick Simpson.

"The men and women of this program are certainly establishing themselves as something very special. It is evident by their all-out attack on the record books. But more importantly, it's how they go about doing it that makes them so special," Simpson said.

Thursday's finals started with the women's 500-yard freestyle. Emily Mayo, Caitlin Daday and Mary Snyder finished 1-2-3 for the Wildcats, and Christine Sullivan added a fifth place finish. Mayo won the event in a time of 4:44.91.

In the men's 500-yard freestyle, John Paul Naughton touched the wall at 4:30.86 to finish in fifth place and earn a spot on the podium.

Sophomore Darby Goodwin broke her own school record and took the top spot in the women's 200-yard IM with a NCAA "B" cut time of 1:59.42. Freshman Justin Cucchi followed that performance with a third place finish in the men's 200-yard IM. Cucchi clocked in at 1:50.47, which was just .08 seconds off of a Villanova school record.

The women's 50-yard freestyle saw Alexa Fabbri and Taylor Wilson sprint to first and second place finishes, respectively. Fabbri won the event in a time of 22.70.

Jake Hoin placed second in the men's 50-yard freestyle with a school-record time of 20.59. Hoin just narrowly missed out on a first place finish, as he was just .19 seconds behind Seton Hall's Dakota Williams.

Once the men's 50-yard freestyle wrapped up, the women's one meter diving event took place. Freshman Bridie Dunn had entered the finals in second place, after finishing the preliminary round with a score of 269.70. Dunn saved her best performances for the evening, as she went on to win the event, totaling a final score of 534.40.

The women's and men's 200-yard freestyle relays concluded Thursday's action. Villanova's women's team of Fabbri, Goodwin, Jessie Randolph, and Wilson won gold in a school-record time of 1:30.53.

Hoin, Tyler Nussbaum, Christopher Paynter, and Stephen Krecsmar followed suit in the men's 200-yard freestyle, winning the event in a time of 1:21.18, which set a school record. Hoin also broke an individual mark in the event, as he set the fastest time for a starting leg in Villanova history.

"It was a very historic night with a huge win in the women's one meter diving event and then capping off the night with the men winning the BIG EAST title in the 200-yard freestyle relay. This is the first time since the 1990's that we have won those events," said Simpson.
