Villanova Women Win Fourth Straight BIG EAST Championship

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. - The Villanova women's swimming and diving team won its fourth consecutive BIG EAST title on Saturday evening at the Nassau County Aquatic Center. The Wildcats earned the top spot with 1,017 points.

Darby Goodwin was named the BIG EAST Women's Most Outstanding Swimmer for the second year in a row. Head Coach Rick Simpson earned BIG EAST Women's Coach of the Year honors, and Todd Michael was named the Women's Co-Diving Coach of the Year.

Villanova's men's team finished the meet in fourth place with 614.5 points, and Seton Hall claimed the men's championship.

Throughout the week, Villanova broke 18 school records and had a number of first place finishes. In Saturday's finale, the Wildcats won six events.

Saturday's finals started with the women's 1650-yard freestyle. Emily Mayo and Caitlin Daday took the top two spots, with Mayo winning the event for the third consecutive year in a NCAA "B" cut time of 16:28.54. On the men's side of the event, John Paul Naughton earned a third place finish.

In the 200-yard backstroke, Goodwin raced to a first place finish in a time of 1:55.02. The men's 200-yard backstroke saw Andrew Kelley and Justin Cucchi win gold and silver, respectively. Kelley edged Cucchi by .32 seconds to take the top spot on the podium.

Four Wildcats earned awards in the women's 100-yard freestyle. Alexa Fabbri won the event in a time of 49.70. Teammates Taylor Wilson, Jessie Randolph, and Mary Snyder finished second, fourth and sixth, respectively. Jake Hoin earned fifth place honors in the men's 100-yard freestyle with a time of 45.42.

Heather Farley, Brooke Bruno and Olivia Cacciatore went 2-3-4 in the women's 200-yard breaststroke, with Farley touching the wall at 2:14.50. On the men's side, Tyler Nussbaum took fourth place in the event with a time of 2:03.20.

The women's 200-yard butterfly saw five Wildcats finish in the top eight. Christine Sullivan won the event in a time of 2:00.74, and Mackenzie Niness took silver in the event. Tarryn Els placed fourth, and Sara Nicolosi and Erin Merkle finished in seventh and eighth place, respectively.

Freshman Jade Rice earned a third place finish in the men's 200-yard butterfly, and Luke Sabal also got a spot on the podium with a sixth place finish.

In women's three meter diving action, Bridie Dunn set a school record for six dives with a score of 278.70. She earned a bronze medal for her performance.

The night closed with the 400-yard freestyle relays. Villanova's team of Wilson, Randolph, Goodwin and Fabbri won the women's event in a time of 3:20.10. The men's team of Jake Hoin, Stephen Krecsmar, Christopher Paynter and John Paul Naughton won a bronze medal with a time of 3:01.50.
