RESULTS | BOAT LINEUPS

The Villanova women's rowing team competed in their first race of the season at the Rollins Invitational on Lake Maitland in Florida. The Varsity Eight boat was the first boat to compete and picked up a win with a 6:35.5 finish. They beat Duquesne, Rollins and Assumption in this race. The Varsity Eight boat consisted of Maggie Cavanaugh at the coxswain, Emily Lenane, Eryn McCassey, Hailey Hurteau, Eileen Gaffney, Briggs Mroz, Morgan Mroz, Kiera McCloy, and Valerie Burke.

"Although, winning the V8 was a huge accomplishment for the program analysis of the results suggest that our overall speed has improved across the entire program. Comparing margins from 2016 and 2017 between Duquesne and Villanova in all events demonstrates that we have significantly closed the gap," stated head coach Carissa Adams. The Varsity Eight boat had not won since 2005 and was a huge improvement for the Wildcats.

The second Varsity Eight and the Frosh/Novice Eight both finished second in their respective races. In each race, Duquesne finished first and Rollins finished third. The Wildcats also finished second to Duquesne in the Third Varsity Eight boat. Lastly, in the Varsity Four boat, the Wildcats yet again finished second behind Duquesne, but beat out Assumption and Rollins.

"This was an exciting way to start the spring season and we are looking forward to further progress in races to come. I feel honored to be working with a group of strong women that are committed to the goal of making Villanova Women's Rowing relevant both regionally and nationally. I applaud every athlete on our roster for their efforts throughout winter training and encourage them to continue to push through our championship season," added Adams.

The Wildcats will return home to compete in the Murphy Cup on March 25th in Philadelphia, Pa.
