Sept. 17, 2017 Final Results: Day 2 | Day 3
VILLANOVA, Pa.- This weekend, the Villanova Wildcat men's tennis team hosted the seventh annual Villanova Invitational. In conclusion on Sunday, a pair of doubles teams along with two singles participants walked away as champions in their respective draw. Head coach Brad Adams talked about the first full weekend of competition for his team, "I was extremely pleased to see three of our teams in the finals of both the Blue and White draws. The guys worked extremely hard over the last couple of weeks in practice and their results showed how hard work can pay off".
Blue Draw:
On Saturday in the second round of the Blue draw, the Wildcats faced La Salle in the first match. In the "two and one" format, doubles partners Tyler Roth and Tommy Dodson edged La Salle's doubles team 6-3. After strong play by both, they tied for the championship in the Blue draw with fellow teammates William Elmore and Tommy Mulfur. Individually, Roth and Dodson also snagged victories over the Explorers.
The next Wildcats to face competition in round two were William Elmore and Tommy Mulfur. In the doubles competition against Chestnut Hill, Elmore and Mulfur defeated the Griffins, while they also won individually. The duo tied for a championship in the doubles competition.
The third round of doubles competition was also played on Saturday. Doubles partners Stefan Suarez and Mike Czlonka saw their first victory of the day against La Salle, winning the match 6-3.
On Sunday, Elmore/Mulfur and Roth/Dodson were both crowned champions of the Blue draw.
"I was really impressed with the composure of Tommy Mulflur, Mike Czlonka and Alastair Hurry to pull of victories when trailing early." said Adams.
White Draw:
In the first match of the day on Saturday, Alastair Hurry and Matt Phelps couldn't execute a victory in their doubles match coming up short against Delaware. While they didn't see a win in the doubles match, they both came out with a victory in their singles matches. With their wins, they earned championships individually. "Matt Phelps had a monster tournament and put on one of the best performances of the weekend in both singles and doubles." said Adams.
Other Wildcats that were in action in the second round of completion were Danny Nomura and Daniel Martinez. They edged Delaware in their doubles match as Nomura notched a victory in his singles match.
In the final round of play on Sunday, Hurry/Phelps and Nomura/Martinez both came out on top as three of the four Wildcats earned wins in their singles matches as well. Hurry and Phelps were also crowned champions of the white draw.
"A lot of the guys showed a lot of heart and were able to grind out tough wins through adverse conditions and tough opponents. It was a great start of the 2017-2018 year but the team recognizes that we have a lot more work to do to achieve our goal. " said Adams.
Next up for the Wildcats is a trip to Philadelphia, Pa. as they will particpate in the Saint Joseph's Invitational. Play is et to being on Friday, Sept. 22 and conclude on the Sunday, Sept. 24.
