Villanova Falls to Marquette 67-57

VILLANOVA, PA. - In women's basketball action on Sunday, Jan. 21, the Villanova Wildcats fell to the Marquette Golden Eagles by a score of 67-57. With the loss, Villanova drops to 15-5 overall and 5-4 in Big East play, while Marquette improves to 14-6 on the year and 8-1 in conference play.

The Wildcats came out strong and led 10-9 at the first media timeout. Four different Wildcats accounted for the first 10 points, with senior forward Alex Louin and junior forward Jannah Tucker tallying three points each.

A jumper by Allazia Blockton at the 4:51 mark propelled the Golden Eagles on a 13-5 run en route to a 22-15 lead after one. Marquette made five of its last seven first quarter shots.

Marquette led 32-23 with 2:51 to go in the second quarter, when Villanova scored six of the final 10 points of the half to cut the Golden Eagle lead to 34-29 at intermission. The six Wildcat points included a three-ball and a free throw by sophomore guard Grace Stant and a driving lay-up by sophomore forward Mary Gedaka.

After Tucker buried a three on the first possession of the fourth quarter to slice the Marquette advantage to 47-42, the Golden Eagles used a 12-2 run to open up a 59-44 lead with 5:22 to play. Blockton led the Golden Eagle spurt scoring six of the 12 points on two driving lay-ups and two foul shots.

The Wildcats then used a 9-2 run to make it a 61-53 game with 2:55 remaining. Gedaka had four points and an assist in the run. Villanova got two defensive stops on the next two Marquette possessions, but the Wildcats had a turnover and a missed shot on their next two times down the court.

Marquette put the game away with 51 seconds on the clock when Natisha Hiedeman connected on a 15-foot jumper. The basket increased the Golden Eagle advantage to 63-53.

In the loss, Gedaka and Louin tallied 11 points each, while Tucker and senior center Megan Quinn had nine points apiece. Quinn and sophomore forward Bridget Herlihy led Villanova on the boards with seven rebounds each.

Junior center Erika Davenport paced Marquette with 22 points and 12 rebounds, while Blockton finished with 21 points and eight caroms. Hiedeman reached double figures with 11 points.

For the game, Villanova shot 39.3 percent from the field (22-of-56), 21.7 percent from three (5-of-23) and 61.5 percent from the foul line (8-of-13), while Marquette was 25-of-62 from the floor (40.3%), 3-of-10 from long distance (30.0%) and 14-of-17 from the charity stripe (82.4%). The Golden Eagles owned a 40-34 advantage on the backboards.

Villanova returns to action on Friday, Jan. 26, with a road game at Xavier. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
