Hot Shooting Leads Villanova To 89-50 Win At Xavier

CINCINNATI, OHIO - The Villanova Wildcats shot a blistering 61.7 percent from the field and led wire to wire in an 89-50 win over the host Xavier Musketeers. With the victory, Villanova improves to 16-5 overall and 6-4 in Big East play, while Xavier falls to 9-12 overall and 2-8 in conference action.

Villanova raced to a 10-2 lead just 3:23 into the game. The 10 Wildcat points included three-point field goals by junior guard Adrianna Hahn and senior guard Alex Louin and a 15-foot jumper and lay-up by junior forward Jannah Tucker.

A lay-up by Xavier guard Na'Teshia Owens cut the Villanova to 15-6, before the Wildcats scored nine consecutive points to take a 24-6 lead with 47 seconds remaining in the opening quarter. After Hahn started the run with a deep three, Villanova scored on three lay-ups by Louin, and sophomore forwards Mary Gedaka and Bridget Herlihy. Xavier closed out the first quarter scoring on a three-ball by Aaliyah Dunham that made it a 24-9 game after one.

The Wildcats put the game away with a phenomenal second quarter effort. Villanova went 11-of-16 from the field (68.8%) and 6-of-8 from long distance (75.0%) during the second stanza. The 'Cats used an 18-3 run over the first 6:08 of the second quarter to take a commanding 42-12 lead.

During the 18-3 spurt, Villanova made seven of nine from the field, including a perfect four-of-four from long distance. Louin buried two of the four trifectas, while Hahn scored on two driving lay-ups.

Villanova finished the first half connecting on 21-of-32 from the floor for 61.7 percent and 10-of-17 from behind the arc for 46.7 percent en route to a 52-16 halftime lead. Xavier was 7-of-31 from the field in the opening 20 minutes for 30.6 percent and were just 1-of-14 from three-point range.

Xavier would not get within 30 in the second half and the Wildcats would lead by as many as 40 to cruise to the win.

In the victory, Louin led the Wildcats with a season-high 24 points on 9-of-14 shooting overall and a 5-of-10 effort from three. She also added a game-high tying six rebounds and four assists. Tucker finished with 12 points on a perfect 5-of-5 shooting performance (2-of-2 from three), while Hahn was a perfect 4-of-4 from the floor and 2-of-2 from long range for 10 points.

The Musketeers were paced by Owens who had 11 points. She was the only Xavier player in double figures.

For the game, Villanova was 37-of-60 from the field (61.7%), 14-of-30 from three-point range (46.7%) and 1-of-3 from the foul line (33.3%), while Xavier shot 30.6 percent from the floor (19-of-62), 19.2 percent from long distance (5-of-26) and 63.6 percent from the charity stripe (7-of-11). The Wildcats owned a 38-31 advantage on the backboards. Villanova was charged with nine turnovers.

Villanova returns to action on Sunday, Jan. 28, with a game at Butler. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
