VILLANOVA, Pa.—Fresh off a highlight-reel victory on the road last weekend, Villanova (4-5, 1-5 CAA Football) returns home to host William & Mary (3-5, 2-3) on Saturday afternoon. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Villanova Stadium as the Wildcats play their final home game of the 2018 campaign. The graduating seniors on the Villanova roster will be recognized on the field in a pregame ceremony beginning at approximately 12:50 p.m.
Saturday's game will be broadcast live on FOX College Sports Atlantic and the FOX Sports GO mobile app. The radio broadcast with Ryan Fannon and Kevin Reilly calling the action can be heard on 610 ESPN as well as online at villanova.com.
This is the first trip to the Main Line since 2015 for the Tribe, who lead the all-time series with the Wildcats by a 17-15-1 margin. The last head-to-head victory for each team came on the road, as William & Mary tallied a 38-16 victory at Villanova Stadium three years ago and Villanova was a 35-31 winner in Williamsburg in 2014. In all, the Wildcats are 11-7 at home in the series.
A huge effort by the Villanova defense fueled a 45-21 win at Richmond last week. Freshman cornerback
Christian Benford (Randallstown, Md.) and sophomore corner
Nowoola Awopetu (Staten Island, N.Y.) combined for five interceptions as the Wildcats forced seven turnovers for the first time in 11 years. Benford had three picks, the first Villanova player to reach that total since 2011, and Awopetu set a record by becoming the first player in program history to return two interceptions for touchdowns in the same game.
Thanks to last week's deluge of forced turnovers, the Wildcats now lead CAA Football with 21 turnovers gained and 15 interceptions on the year. Villanova ranks third in the nation in interceptions and is ranked 15
th in turnover margin with a plus-seven mark for the season. Benford leads the CAA with five interceptions, part of a strong freshman season which has also seen him record 41 tackles, including two tackles for loss, and two pass breakups.
On the offensive side of the ball, senior running back
Aaron Forbes (Newburgh, N.Y.) became the 11
th player in school history to rush for at least 2,000 career yards when he surpassed that milestone in the Richmond win. Forbes ran for a career-high 160 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries versus the Spiders, and he enters Saturday's game with 2,089 career yards and 14 touchdowns. Forbes ranks 11
th in school history in career rushing, but needs just 72 more yards to move into a tie for ninth place and 131 yards to jump to as high as sixth among the Wildcats all-time leaders.
William & Mary is coming off a bye week and is 3-5 on the year, including 2-3 in conference play and 1-4 on the road. Sophomore quarterback Shon Mitchell has thrown for 1,181 yards and four touchdowns on the year, with senior wide receiver DeVonte Dedmon making 31 catches for 530 yards and four scores. Junior safety Isaiah Laster and junior linebacker Nate Atkins lead the Tribe defense with 53 tackles apiece.
Following the game against William & Mary, the Wildcats will close out the 2018 regular season against Delaware on November 17 at 12 p.m.
