VILLANOVA, PA. ââ'¬" In women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon, the Villanova Wildcats earned a hard fought 68-67 win over the visiting Georgetown Hoyas. With the victory, the Wildcats improve to 18-5 overall and 8-4 in Big East play, while Georgetown falls to 10-12 overall and 5-7 in conference action.
Villanova led 56-55 with 4:13 to play when sophomore forward Mary Gedaka scored on a driving lay-up to give her team a 58-55 advantage. The Wildcats forced a Georgetown turnover on the ensuing possession and took advantage of the Hoya miscue when Gedaka scored again on a left-handed lay-up. The Gedaka bucket gave Villanova a 60-55 lead with 3:37 on the clock.
On Georgetown's next possession, the Hoyas misfired on a three and a 10-foot jumper and the Wildcats had the ball up five with 2:54 to play. The Wildcats ran a deliberate offensive set and executed it to perfection when Gedaka drained a three from the left wing to increase the Villanova lead to 63-55 at the 2:24 mark.
The Hoyas would not go away, as they scored four of the game's next five points to slice the Villanova advantage to 64-60 with 1:44 on the clock. Villanova senior guard Alex Louin was fouled on Villanova's next trip down the court. The two Louin free throws gave the Wildcats a 66-60 lead with 1:23 to go.
After Georgetown's Dionna White scored on a lay-up to make it a 66-62 game, Wildcat sophomore guard Kelly Jekot made one-of-two from the foul line and Villanova led 67-62 with 25 seconds to play.
Georgetown's Mikayla Venson connected on a deep three to make it a one possession game at 67-65 with seven seconds on the clock. Villanova then called timeout and advanced the ball to the front court where they inbounded the ball to Louin who was fouled with 5.9 seconds remaining. Louin made the first and missed the second and Villanova held a 68-65 lead. White then scored on an uncontested lay-up for Georgetown that made it a 68-67 game with five tenths of a second to go.
Gedaka led the Wildcats in the win with 17 points to go with nine rebounds. She was 7-of-12 from the field. Louin tallied 14 points and nine rebounds, while Jekot added 13 points, four rebounds and four assists.
Georgetown was paced by Venson with a game-high 23 points and White who had 21 points. Venson was 5-of-9 from three-point range. Cynthia Petke registered a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds.
For the game, Villanova was 25-of-49 from the field (51.0%), 7-of-16 from three-point range (43.8%) and 11-of-20 from the foul line (55.0%), while Georgetown shot 38.7 percent from the floor (29-of-75), 31.6 percent from behind the arc (6-fo-19) and 37.5 percent from the charity stripe (3-of-8). The Hoyas owned a 42-34 advantage on the backboards.
Villanova returns to action on Friday, Feb. 9, when the St. John's Red Storm visits the Jake Nevin Field House. Tip-off is set for 11:30 a.m.
