Wildcats Fall to Providence in BIG EAST Opener

Villanova, Pa.- Villanova outshot their opponent by a 17-13 margin for the contest but couldn't come away with the win as Providence defeated the Wildcats 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at Higgins Soccer Complex.

"Tough game for us today, we created many opportunities but the quality of those opportunities is not going to beat a goalkeeper of that caliber," shared head coach Chris McLain.

The teams were tied 0-0 at intermission with the Wildcats having their best chance in the 43rd minute when Kristen Vinciguerra placed her shot right on goal but the Friars keeper was able to make the save to keep the game scoreless.

In the 50th minute the Friars netted their first goal of the game when Hannah McNulty placed the ball as it came off a Villanova player at the top of the box into the back of the net.  Just eight minutes later Kayla Steeves bent a Providence corner kick into the opposite top corner of the goal to make it 2-0.

Ciara Terabasso gave the Wildcats two great chances after, she placed a shot on goal in the 65th minute and another in the final minutes of the game.  On the day she led the Wildcats with four shots while sophomore Bri Austin had three.

"We are very young but we grew today," continued McLai.  "If you were to ask me if we could limit Providence to four shots on frame, I would of liked our chances. Our players were prepared and to let two balls in on restarts was tough for our players to swallow. I tip my hat off to Providence... they buried them in the net."

The Wildcats will continue conference play on Thursday afternoon when they host the Marquette Golden Eagles.  Kickoff is set for 4:00 P.M. and can be seen on BEDN.

"We move on to the next game. We can dwell on this for 24 hrs., but to be honest my thoughts have already moved on to Marquette," said McLain
