Villanova, Pa.- The Villanova Wildcats (5-3-2, 1-0 BIG EAST) will continue BIG EAST play this week against the 2018 BIG EAST Champions, the Georgetown Hoyas, on Thursday at Higgins Soccer Complex. On Sunday the Wildcats will travel to the Butler Bulldogs for a 1:00 P.M. kickoff in Indianapolis.
Villanova opened conference play last weekend with a 1-0 win over the Xavier Musketeers.
Brice McInroy netted the game winner in the 57
th minute, this was the sophomores second straight game winning goal and her third of the season. For her efforts McInroy was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll along with graduate student keeper
Rebecca Gartner. Gartner, who picked up her second straight shutout, had five saves against the Musketeers.
Sam Rosette,
Chloe O'Neill, and
Allison Breed all have six points on the season while
Kristin Barbour and
Jane Olcott have the other points the Wildcats have picked up this season. Gartner in just over 438 minutes of action has a .765 save percentage and 1.64 goals against average.
A Look at Georgetown: The Hoyas enter Thursday's game with a 7-2-1 overall record and 1-0 in conference play. A season ago the Hoyas picked up both the BIG EAST Regular Season and Tournament Title and advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament.
Georgetown defeated Marquette 3-0 in their BIG EAST opener with Amanda Carolan scoring two of the goals and Julia Leas netted the other. Anna Leat played all 90 minutes between the posts and save the three shots she faced on goal. On the season the freshman keeper has a .690 save percentage and 1.16 goals against average.
Carolan leads the Hoyas offense with 17 points on seven goal and three assists while senior Paula Germino-Watnick leads the team in assists with six along with four goals for 14 points. 13 other Hoya's have contributed points this season, nine of those have found the back of the cage at least once.
A Look at Butler: The Bulldogs are currently 6-3-1 overall and 1-0 in conference action. Prior to hosting the Wildcats on Sunday Butler will travel to DePaul for a Thursday afternoon match.
Butler defeated Seton Hall 3-0 in their BIG EAST opener on Sunday with three different student-athletes finding the back of the net. Katie Soderstorm who netted one of the goals in the Bulldogs point leader with 15 on four goals and seven assists. Sophomore forward Anja Savich has netted six goals, a team high, along with dished out two assists for 14 points. Macy Miller has also contributed double digit points this season, the senior has 11 points on three goals and five assists.
In goal all season has been Stephanie Rodriguez, who in 925 minutes between the post boasts a 0.97 goals against average and 0.750 save percentage. The junior this season had a season high eight saves in a 2-1 loss to Wisconsin and had back-to-back games with six saves in the Bulldogs final two non-conference games.
