Rowing Has Successful Day at HOSR

Philadelphia - Villanova rowing enjoyed a successful day on the river at the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta in Philadelphia yesterday. The day gave nearly the entire team a chance to compete, and each rower competed hard following a good week of practice leading up the regatta.

"The weather worked in our favor and we feel very lucky to have had a fantastic day on the river," head coach Carissa Adams said. The day saw overcast skies, but no rain, and a temperature hovering in the low 60s.

The day began with the novice 4, who got the day off to a strong start placing fifth out of 23

Next up was the Varsity 4. Villanova had two entries finishing within half a second of one another in 20th and 21st out of a 48 boat field.

Villanova entered two boats into the Frosh/Novice Eights race. The two finished 15th and 20th out of 21 boats. Each of these entries were walk-on athletes that had never picked up oars prior to the season, and were competing against teams with recruited freshman with years of experience.

Two Wildcat boats also competed in the Women's Club Championship Eights. The boats finished 8th at 14:34.959 and 24th at 15:25.282 out of a 38 boat field.

The day concluded with the Varsity Eight. The Wildcats placed eighth out of 12 and clocked in at 14:14.966.

"We were very happy with the performance from all of our boats today," said head coach Carissa Adams. "We saw improvement by closing the gap between our boats and the top performers from our last race two weeks ago. It was wonderful for the athletes to realize that their hard work over fall break paid off and made them more competitive with highly competitive programs."

In addition to the racing, the naming ceremony for three boats took place. The boats were named after former head coach Jack St. Clair, former Nova rower and world champion Ellen Minzer, and Chris St. Clair, the wife of Coach St. Clair.

"The highlight of the day was our boat naming ceremony," Coach Adams said. "It was an honor to celebrate three individuals that have had a tremendous impact on our program."

Villanova will conclude its fall schedule on Nov. 2 with the 1969 Cup in Cherry Hill, NJ.
