Indianapolis, Ind.- The Villanova Wildcats (6-4-3) picked up a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon at Butler (6-4-2).
"Today's point was a great result for us," head coach
Chris McLain shared. "Although it was difficult to give up a goal late in the game, we fully earned the point and our players dug very deep and played with a ton of heart the entire game. I am so proud of them."
Just before halftime the Wildcats netted their lone goal of the game when freshman
Makayla Stadler broke away downfield. The rookie was able to get a shot off that was saved by the Bulldogs keeper and bounced right by to her. Stadler was then able to get a second shot off that found the opposite corner of the net to put the Wildcats up 1-0.
The Bulldogs were able to net the equalizer on a successful penalty kick in the 86
th minute, the shot was taken by Anja Savich to tie the game up at 1 with just minutes to go in regulation. The Wildcats had taken five shot on goal and were able to limit the Bulldogs to two during the 90 minutes.
"Unfortunately, we had a 13-hour trip to get out here," McLain shared. "For our captains to get our team focused and prepared for this game is a true testament to them. They made sure the team never lost focus of what the goal was for today."
In overtime the Wildcats took four shots and were able to get one on goal that was saved by the Bulldogs while Butler only got one shot off the
Rebecca Gartner was able to push away. The graduate student picked up three saves on the day.
'Again, I am so proud of this team," McLain said. "The heart they played with was second to none. They have put us in a great position in the league headed into Seton Hall on Thursday. We start preparing for them tomorrow morning.
Villanova will travel to Seton Hall on Thursday night. Kickoff is South Orange is scheduled for 6:00 P.M.
