Softball beats LIU, Falls to Stetson

Orlando, Fl. – Villanova wraps up day two of the Citrus Blossom Classic with a win against LIU Brooklyn and a loss against Stetson.

LIU Brooklyn
Villanova came out crushing the ball as they beat the Blackbirds 9-3. The Wildcats struck first in the second inning when Megan Ruiz crossed the plate after a throwing error by the LIU catcher. Olivia LaQua then hit an RBI double to right center that scored Becky Ducar to give Villanova a 2-0 lead.

Paige Rauch picked right up where she left off on Friday as she mashed a three-run home run to put Villanova up 5-0. Julia DaCosta then hit a solo shot in the third inning to give the Cats a 6-0 lead heading into the fourth.

LIU Brooklyn picked up three runs in the fourth inning off of two homeruns to cut the lead in half.
The Wildcats scored three more unanswered runs to put the game out of reach. Rauch hit her second homer of the game, third of the season in the fifth inning after being down 0-2 in the count. She took the count even before hitting the homerun.

Ryan Henry scored on a wild pitch in the sixth and a Delaney Switzer single scored Caroline Jones in the seventh to wrap up the scoring for Villanova.

Rauch got the starting nod on the mound. She went 3.1 IP and gave up just three hits, two earned runs, while striking out four and picking up her second win on the season. For the second day in a row, Kalee Smith has been great coming in relief. She pitched 3.2 innings, giving up just four hits, one earned run, and picked up the save.

Stetson
Villanova held Stetson scoreless in six of the seven innings. The issue was in the inning the Hatters scored, they scored eight runs.

Sara Kennedy made her first collegiate start against Stetson. It was smooth sailing through the first three innings until she ran into some trouble in the fourth. Anissa Amarillas came in to replace her, but Stetson came out of the inning with eight.

Jordan Olivarez got the Cats on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo home run to left center. Villanova was then held scoreless until the seventh inning when DaCosta hit a two-run triple that scored Jones and Angela Giampolo. Giampolo finished the game going 2-4 with a run scored and stolen base out of the leadoff spot for Villanova.

Villanova will play their final game of the Citrus Blossom Classic on Sunday morning against Bethune-Cookman. First pitch is scheduled for 11:30 A.M.
