College Park, Md. – Villanova finishes up day two of the Maryland Invitational with 1-1 record falling to Maryland and defeating Saint Peter's.
Maryland
After a slow start, the offense picked it up late, but it was not enough as the Wildcats fell to the Terrapins 6-5.
Maryland scored the first four runs of the game before
Anissa Amarillas got the Wildcats on the board with a solo home run in the fifth inning.
The Terrapins then added two more runs in the sixth to make it a 6-1 game. Villanova had a late rally in the seventh inning with a two run single from
Paige Rauch and a two run double from
Becky Ducar to cut it to one, but the rally came up just short.
The Wildcats had two runners on with one out but could not score the game tying run.
Saint Peter's
Game two of the day came against Saint Peter's and ended in a 12-1 win for the Wildcats.
Villanova was in the driver's seat from beginning to end as they jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning. All of the starters scored at least one run in the game fueling the team to their big victory. As a whole the team only had one strikeout in their 23 at bats.
Julia DaCosta and
Ryan Henry each hit a home run in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 12-0 which was more than enough for
Taylor Rhinehart who got the start on the mound. Henry's home run was the first of her career as a Wildcat.
Rhinehart pitched five strong innings allowing just two hits and one run and didn't allow a single walk while picking up her first win of the season.
