West Orange, N.J. – The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead and added 12 runs in the fifth inning to notch a 16-0 win and a 1-0 record in BIG EAST play.
Villanova put up four in the first inning and would never look back.
Becky Ducar opened the scoring on an infield single to the short stop that would score
Angela Giampolo.
Delaney Switzer and
Ryan Henry both then reached on fielder's choices which would increase the lead to 4-0 after one inning.
The scoring in the fifth opened up with a
Paige Rauch RBI double to left field that scored
Sydney Hayes. Their next run would come on a failed suicide squeeze, but Giampolo would be able to score after the throw went to third. Ducar would then come through with another RBI single that would score
Paige Rauch.
Caroline Jones would then rope a ball to third that was booted and scored Switzer and Ducar. Henry came up and delivered a deep single to left center that scored Jones and
Megan Ruiz making the lead 11-0. The Wildcats were nowhere near done still has
Kendall Ohman scored on a fielder's choice hit by Hayes. This brought Giampolo back to the plate and she hit a line drive off of Seton Hall's pitcher that would score
Olivia LaQua.
Julia DaCosta would reach on an error by the third baseman and would make the score 15-0. The final run of the game came when Jones hit a sac fly to center that scored Rauch.
While the offense was clicking, so was the pitching. Rauch started the game on the mound and went four innings allowing just one hit, two walks, and struck out eight.
Kalee Smith came in to finish off the game in the fifth and pitched a scoreless inning and also added a strikeout.
Eight different players record an RBI in the game, led by Henry who had four, and Jones who had three. Five different Wildcats also recorded a stolen base including Giampolo, Rauch, Ducar, Ohman, and LaQua.
Softball will be back in action tomorrow with a double header against the Pirates. The first game will begin at noon with the second game following a half hour after the ending of the first. Live stats and broadcast will be provided for both games.
