Lilly Homers Twice, Ties School Record With Eight RBI in 19-16 Loss to Mount St. Mary’s

Teams combined for 35 runs, 31 hits and 15 walks in a nearly four-plus hour slugfest for the ages

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla.—Junior left fielder Timothy Lilly (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) hit a grand slam for the second straight day and became only the sixth batter in the program's 150-plus years of history to drive in eight runs in a game, all part of a historic offensive tussle in which Villanova (1-9) fell to Mount St. Mary's (3-3) by a final count of 19-16 on Sunday night.  The two teams staged a wild affair which featured a combined 35 runs scored, 105 batters sent to the plate and more than 400 pitches thrown in a four-hour marathon.

Lilly hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning, walked with the bases loaded to force in a run in the second and then doubled his RBI total with a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth.  He is the Wildcats first batter with eight RBI in a game since Jeff Stetina in 1997, while his multi-homer game was Villanova's first since senior first baseman JP Radvany (Lawrenceville, N.J.) homered twice at Lafayette last season.

There were plenty of other superlatives from the game.  The total of 35 runs scored was the most in a game since April 6, 2012 when the Wildcats defeated West Virginia (26-11) in a 37-run maelstrom.  Sunday's game was also the first in which both Villanova and its opponent scored 16 or more runs since the Wildcats defeated Georgia Tech (18-16) on May 27, 1989 in an NCAA Regional game.  The last time Villanova scored 16 or more runs in a loss was on April 22, 1989 against Seton Hall (17-22).

If anything needed to be added to Sunday's strange-but-true event, it's that the game was the Wildcats second of the day.  Villanova fell to Chicago State, 13-9, in a contest that began at 12 p.m. and did not end until shortly before 4 p.m. at North County Regional Park.  The game with Mount St. Mary's started at 4:40 p.m. and ended shortly before 9:00, by which time the Wildcats had continuously been on the field for nearly nine hours.

Lilly, freshman designated hitter Nick Lorusso (Monroe, Conn.) and sophomore second baseman Pat O'Neill (Eagleville, Pa.) scored three runs apiece in the nightcap, while Reiner was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four runs batted in.  The first-year backstop added to his first inning solo homer with a three-run triple in the second inning an infield single in the bottom of the sixth.  He departed after six innings a double short of a cycle.

For a game in which it scored 16 runs, Villanova somehow had only three run-scoring innings.  A six-run outburst in the bottom of the first and a five-run splurge in the second had the Wildcats in front by an 11-4 margin after just two innings of play.  It was actually The Mount who struck first in the game, scoring three times in the top of the first inning and later plating a single run in the second and four more in the top of the third.  The teams had combined for 19 runs on 16 hits, and Villanova led 11-8 after 90 minutes of play.  It was only the end of the third inning.

Freshman shortstop Dylan McNary (Jefferson, Mass.) walked with one out in the bottom of the first inning, Lorusso and Radvany followed with consecutive RBI doubles and junior third baseman John Heilenbach (Western Springs, Ill.) singled before Lilly hit a 3-2 pitch to left-center for a three-run home run.  Reiner tagged a 1-0 offering for a solo shot to right-center two pitches later.

After going all the way through the batting order in the bottom of the first inning, leadoff hitter Chris Rotondo (Redding, Conn.) walked to open the bottom of the second.  He scored on a balk with one out, Lilly walked to force in a run and Reiner followed with a bases-clearing triple.

The score was 11-9 when the Wildcats came to bat in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Lorusso walked, Radvany singled and O'Neill walked to load the bases with nobody out and set the table for more fireworks.  Lilly came up with one away and hit a 1-0 pitch to left for his third home run in the past two days and his second of the game.  That made the score 15-9, and the inning wasn't quite over.  Reiner reached on an infield hit, took second on a wild pitch and scored on Rotondo's RBI single to left as Villanova matched its largest lead of the game with a seven-run advantage.

Mount St. Mary's scored twice in the seventh inning to get within 16-11 and then turned the tables with a seven-run frame in the top of the eighth.  That inning ended with the Wildcats trailing 18-16, and The Mount added an insurance run in the top of the ninth to close the scoring.

Five defensive miscues by Villanova led to nine unearned runs in the game.

Wyatt Stuckey (1-0, 0.00) was the sixth of seven pitchers for Mount St. Mary's and pitched a scoreless seventh inning to earn the win.  Dennis Snyder recorded the final six outs for a save.

After four games in three days which featured a combined 99 runs scored this weekend, the Wildcats will take a much-needed day off on Monday.  Villanova will be back in action on Tuesday afternoon when it faces Western Michigan at 1:30 p.m.  The game takes place on Field #10 at North County Regional Park.

NOTES: Villanova scored 52 runs in its four games over the weekend … It is the most runs in a four-game span since the Wildcats had 52 runs from March 15-20, 1998 … Lorusso has reached base safely in 10 consecutive games to start his collegiate career … He is leading Villanova on the season with a .375 (12-for-32) batting average and a .574 on-base percentage … Lorusso has reached base in 27-of-47 plate appearances, including drawing 12 walks … Six batters on the team are hitting .300 or better through 10 games … As a team, the Wildcats have a .409 on-base percentage and are averaging 9.2 hits to go along with 8.7 walks and hit batters per game … Villanova is 13-21 all-time in the Snowbird Baseball Classic.
