Villanova, Pa.- The Penn Quakers jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter and the Wildcats were unable to ever catch up and fell on Friday night by a final of 13-11.
During the early run Sam Handley had a pair of goals and assists for the Quakers and finished the night with seven total points. It was
Connor Kirst who got the Wildcats on the board with just over four to play in the first quarter to make the score at the end of one 6-1 Penn.
Penn started the second quarter off with a quick goal but then the Wildcats fought back netting five straight goals and bring the game within one. It was five different Villanova players who got in on the action during the run which started with a
Joey Froccaro goal at the 9:22 mark in the second quarter. After
Keegan Khan and
TJ Comizio would net back-to-back unassisted goals before
Matt Campbell set up Kirst for the final goal before halftime.Â
Villanova went into the locker room down two and started the third with
Corey McManus netting his fourth goal of the season on a pass from
Keegan Khan to make Penn's lead one. Penn answered back with the help of Handley; he dished another assist and then scored the next two goals. Kirst would set up McManus with seconds to go before the end of the third to make the score 10-7 Penn.
The Quakers netted a goal less then a minute into the final quarter and then both teams would go scoreless for almost nine minutes until Penn netted a goal at the 5:04 mark. Penn scored on more with 3:53 to play putting them up six.Â
Kirst lead Villanova on their final comeback attempt. The junior dished out back-to-back assists to Froccaro and McManus and then netted two of his own to bring the game within two with just over a minute left.
Villanova couldn't capitalize in the final minute, making the final 13-11.
The Wildcats will wrap up the Philly 4 Lacrosse Classic on Sunday at Vidas Athletic Complex. Villanova will take on Drexel at 12:00 P.M. and following Saint Joseph's and Penn will faceoff at 2:30 P.M. Both games can be seen on LSN.Â
