Box Score PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. - The Villanova Wildcats fell to the Xavier Musketeers 7-6 on Friday afternoon at Villanova Ballpark. The Wildcats scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game but Xavier scored the go ahead run in the top of the eighth.
Nick Lorusso and
John Heilenbach each led the Wildcats with two hits. Lorusso also had two RBI which was his seventh multi-RBI game of the season.
Lorusso was Villanova's starter, he went four innings allowing 12 hits, five earned runs and struck out four.
Jonathan Rosero pitched the final five innings allowing three hits, one run and three strikeouts.
Xavier started the game with back to back singles. Both runners then advanced a base after a throwing error by the catcher. Then with two outs, Givin singled up the middle scoring both runners and it was 2-0 Musketeers.
In the bottom of the third,
John Heilenbach led off with a single to right center field. Xavier got two quick outs and then
Chris Rotondo walked after an eight pitch at bat.
Nick Lorusso doubled to right center field scoring both Wildcats to tie the game at 2-2.
With one out in the top of the fourth, Altenberger hit a home run to right field to give the Musketeers a 3-2 lead. The next batter singled and then Grammes doubled to put runners on the corners. Shepski singled up the middle scoring both Musketeers and Xavier led 5-2. A two-out single through the left side scored Shepski and Xavier led 6-2.
In the bottom of the sixth, Lorusso got on base after a one out walk.
JP Radvany singled to left field, moving Lorusso to second.
Sam Margulis singled to right center scoring Lorusso and put runners on the corner.
Pat O'Neill followed it up with a RBI double to left center and it was now a two run game. With runners on second and third,
Doug deMarrais laid down a squeeze bunt scoring Margulis and it was 6-5 Xavier.
John Heilenbach tied the game up with a RBI double to right center.
The Musketeers took the lead in the top of the eighth with a bases loaded walk. Villanova got out of the bases loaded jam with a three pitch strikeout.
Villanova retired in order the next two innings and the Musketeers held on to win 7-6.
Game two of the series is tomorrow afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Senior Day festivities will begin around 12:45 p.m.
