LEWISBURG, Pa.—Six different players scored touchdowns in a dominant effort as No. 22 Villanova (3-0) rolled to a 45-10 victory over Bucknell (0-3) at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium on Saturday evening. Junior cornerback
Jaquan Amos (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored his second defensive touchdown of the season on a pick-six just 22 seconds into the game and junior quarterback
Daniel Smith (Leesburg, Va.) threw three touchdown passes for the third straight game as the Wildcats continued a hot start to the season.
Villanova scored the first 35 points of the game and kept the host Bison off the scoreboard until late in the third quarter. Four offensive plays of 30 yards or longer allowed the Wildcats to amass 386 total yards on 63 plays; by comparison, Bucknell totaled 271 yards on 84 plays. Through the first three games of the season, all against Patriot League opponents, Villanova has steamrolled to a +27.7 scoring margin while producing an overall 117-34 scoring edge.
Junior running back
Justin Covington (Bronx, N.Y.) tallied his third consecutive 100-yard game with 119 rushing yards on a mere seven carries. His 64-yard run late in the first quarter set up the Wildcats second touchdown of the game, while freshman
DeeWil Barlee (Upper Darby, Pa.) broke away for a 78-yard scoring run in the third quarter. Villanova ran for 262 yards and had eight different players tally positive rushing yardage.
Smith continues to be a big story under center for the Wildcats and finished Saturday's game 12-of-23 for 109 yards and three scores. He found junior tight end
Todd Summers (Murrysville, Pa.), junior wide receiver
Changa Hodge (East Stroudsburg, Pa.) and sophomore wide receiver
Dez Boykin (Whitehall, Pa.) for touchdown passes, all of which came during the 35-point run to begin the game. Summers scored on a 23-yard touchdown reception with 1:38 left in the opening period for the first of five Villanova offensive touchdowns after Amos opened the scoring with a 34-yard interception return. Smith also ran for 28 yards on five carries and tallied his second rushing touchdown of the season.
The pick-six by Amos was the third defensive touchdown – all on interception returns – in as many games for the Wildcats this season. Amos had a 27-yard return for a score in the season opener, while sophomore cornerback
Elijah Trent (Rockville, Md.) recorded a 37-yard pick-six versus Lehigh last week. Both players came up big in the win over the Bison, with Amos scoring his fourth career touchdown and finishing the night with seven total tackles. Trent recorded a team-high nine tackles, including a tackle for loss, and added three pass breakups.
Villanova held Bucknell to just 46 rushing yards on 29 carries (1.6 yards/rush) and did not surrender a point until Ethan Torres made a 37-yard field goal with 3:28 to play in the third quarter. Lotan Bitikofer scored on a one-yard run with 7:36 left in the game and the Wildcats closed the scoring on a 31-yard field goal by junior kicker
Drew Kresge (Douglassville, Pa.) with 1:39 to play.
Junior defensive lineman
Malik Fisher (New York, N.Y.) tallied his third sack of the season. He has now recorded a sack in four straight games and five of his last six contests dating back to last year.
Villanova opens conference play next Saturday evening with a 6 p.m. game at Towson.
