Wildcats Draw 2-2 at Princeton Thursday Night

Princeton, N.J.- The Villanova Wildcats (3-3-2) played to a tie on Thursday night on the road against the Princeton Tigers by a final of 2-2.

"Where do I start, this game had it all, shared head coach Chris McLain. "Two teams that tried to play attacking entertaining soccer. Credit to Sean, his staff and the Princeton players, they are a good team and they brought out the best of us tonight".

The Wildcats jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Allison Breed set up Brice McInroy to score in the 9th minute.  Breed fed the ball into McInroy at the top of the box, she spun around her defender and slide as she kicked the ball which flew into the right corner of the goal.  In the 30th minute the Tigers netted the equalizer on a successful penalty kick by Courtney O'Brien.  The teams went into halftime tied 1-1.

Princeton would jump ahead in the 53rd minute on another goal by O'Brien.  Villanova was able to tie the game back up in the 69th minute when Sam Rosette fed the ball to Jane Olcott.  Olcott was able to push the ball down to Breed who was one-on-one with the goalkeeper.  As the Tiger keeper dove out for the ball Breed kick the ball over her and it rolled into the back of the net.

The rest of regulation was a back and forth battle with both teams getting shots on goal.  During the final second of regulation the Tigers got a shot off that went into the back of the goal but was called off by the officials and the game went to overtime.

McLain continued, "I'm extremely proud of our team because we thoroughly stayed on the course and trusted each other. When you lean on one another in this fashion you naturally get rewarded".

Graduate student Rebecca Gartner played all 110 minutes in goal and finished with nine saves on the night, six came in the two overtime periods.  The Tigers got off nine total shots while the Wildcats had one during the 20 extra minutes of play.

"Our effort tonight was top class. I felt we could have gone on to win the game, but it just wasn't meant to be. We must now prepare for Brown and it's important we bring this energy and show that we are a good team," said McLain.

Villanova will close out non-conference play on Sunday when they host the Brown Bears at 1:00 P.M.  20 minutes prior to kickoff the team will honor their nine seniors in a ceremony.
