Villanova dropped to 3-3 on the season after an overtime loss to Rider on Sunday afternoon.
Rider set the tone for the game early in the first quarter, with Julia Divorra putting the Broncs up 1-0 in the fourth minute of play.
In the second quarter, Tess Coorens gave Rider a 2-0 lead over the Wildcats in the 27
th minute.
Villanova finished the quarter strong though, with
Katie Capalbo, assisted by
Lydia Sydnor, scoring her first goal of the season and cutting the Broncs lead in half.
Senior back
Christen Pennington, assisted by
Abby Siana, evened the game up at 2-2 off a penalty corner in the 52
nd minute in the fourth quarter.
In last minute of regulation,
Lydia Sydnor gave the Wildcats a 3-2 lead with an unassisted goal.
In the dwindling seconds of the game, Rider earned a two penalty corners.
The Broncs scored the equalizer in one of those corners, which was untimed and came after the clock hit 0.
It took 8:34 in overtime, but Bronc Carly Brosious scored the golden goal which ended the game and broke Villanova's two game win-streak against the team.
Villanova ended the game with 21 penalty corners compared to 6 from Rider.
The Wildcats also took 38 shots in the game to the 7 taken from the Broncs.
"After falling down by two, we settled in and did a great job of getting shots on goal.Their goalkeeper did a great job with all of our pressure against them. We just need to finish on our opportunities," Villanova head coach
Joanie Milhous said after the game.
Now, Villanova will hit the road for two back-to-back away games.
The Wildcats travel to Liberty University on Sept. 27 and then to Penn State on Sept. 29.
