VILLANOVA, Pa.—Senior guard
Cameron Onken recorded the second triple-double in program history, redshirt freshman
Madison Siegrist broke the Wildcats single-season freshman scoring record and Villanova (16-11, 10-6 BIG EAST) celebrated Senior Day with an emotional 76-58 victory over No. 12 DePaul (25-4, 15-2) in front of 2,421 at Finneran Pavilion on Sunday afternoon. The members of the team's senior class were recognized prior to the game, while head coach
Harry Perretta was honored on the court after the final regular season home game of his 42 years on the Wildcats bench. Perretta has announced his retirement at the end of the season.
Villanova knocked off the nationally-ranked Blue Demons and defeated its highest-ranked opponent since toppling No. 11 Duke (64-55) on November 19, 2017 in Jake Nevin Field House. The win also gave the Wildcats a sweep of the top two teams in the BIG EAST standings this weekend. Villanova tallied a 61-47 win over second-place Marquette on Friday night before Sunday's win over a DePaul team which has already clinched the regular season BIG EAST title. No team has swept the Golden Eagles and the Blue Demons in the same weekend since the Wildcats pulled off the double during the 2015-16 season.
Siegrist poured in 29 points and had 13 rebounds to notch her 10
th double-double of the season. A put-back of her own miss with 5:19 to play in the first quarter gave her the Villanova freshman scoring record with 505 points on the year. She broke the record of Wildcats all-time scoring leader Shelly Pennefather whose previous record of 504 points in 1983-84 had stood for 36 years.
Not to be lost in the hoopla was one of the best single-game performances in Villanova history. Onken finished the day with 12 points, 18 rebounds and 10 assists in 39 minutes of action to join Liad Suez-Karni as the only players in school history to have a triple-double. Suez-Karni had 14 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in an overtime win at Notre Dame on February 7, 2006. Onken was well on her way to joining select company by halftime when she had nine points, 10 caroms and five helpers.
Senior forwards
Mary Gedaka and
Bridget Herlihy, along with Onken and team manager Jimmy Davis were introduced in Senior Day ceremonies before the game. Gedaka chipped in to the win with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting and also pulled down eight rebounds to move into the top-10 in school history with 675 boards. Herlihy added four points in 19 minutes and the three seniors exited to a rousing ovation with under a minute to go and the outcome well in hand.
The 18-point final margin and the fact that the Wildcats led the game for more than 35 minutes belied what was a closely-contested affair until the middle of the third quarter. DePaul tied the game at 37-37 on a basket with 6:47 left in that period but two possessions later Gedaka made a layup with 6:14 to play which started an 11-0 run over the next three-plus minutes. Gedaka had five points and Siegrist four in the spurt, which culminated in a pull-up jumper by freshman guard
Brooke Mullin with 2:51 to play which made the score 48-37.
DePaul got as close as six points with 8:35 remaining in the fourth quarter which trimmed the gap to 55-49, but junior guard
Raven James answered with a three-pointer and Villanova put the game well out of reach with a 13-2 burst. James bookended the run with another three-pointer to stretch the score to 68-51 with 5:42 left as the crowd began to anticipate the victory. James finished with nine points and a career-high nine assists. The disciplined Wildcats offense which has been a staple of
Harry Perretta teams for so long was on full display, as Villanova assisted on 26 of its 31 made field goals in the game.
Chante Stonewall led DePaul with 16 points while playing the entire game. Dee Bekelja came off the bench to add 14 points. The Blue Demons fell despite forcing 20 turnovers by the Wildcats while committing just eight miscues of their won. Villanova had a 49-35 rebounding edge.
The win moved the Wildcats into sole possession of fourth place in the BIG EAST standings with two regular season games left. Villanova will go on the road to play at Creighton and Providence next weekend in the final two games of the regular season.
