SAVANNAH, Ga.—It was a busy day for the Villanova golf team on Sunday afternoon as the Wildcats first concluded second round play at the Invitational at Savannah Harbor and then wrapped up their first tournament of the season with third round action during the afternoon. Led by graduate transfer
Ambrose Abbracciamento (Newtown, Pa.) who shot five-over par for the tournament, Villanova came in 14
th out of the 16 teams in the field at the par-72, 7,084-yard Club at Savannah Harbor.
Abbracciamento was two-under through 16 holes in his second round Saturday evening when play was halted due to darkness. He wound up making par on his final two holes Sunday morning to finish that round with a 70 (-2), then led the Wildcats with a 73 (+1) in the third round. Abbracciamento finished the weekend with a score of 78-70-73=221 (+5) to tie for 22
nd place in the field of 87 golfers. His weekend included 35 pars and eight birdies over the 54 holes of play.
Villanova carded team scores of 303-289-314=906 (+42), with its second round of 289 (+1) standing out. That was the Wildcats best team score relative to par since they shot 285 (+1) on March 27, 2017 in the opening round of the Wildcat Invitational at White Manor Country Club. Max Siegfried (Villanova, Pa.) and sophomore
Matt Minerva (Elmsford, N.Y.) who each shot even par, while freshman
Peter Weaver (Frontenac, Mo.) provided the team's final counting score with a 75 (+3).
Weaver came in second to Abbracciamento in the team lineup with a final total of 71-75-80=226 (+10) for the weekend. He tied for 46
th overall, while Siegfried was tied for 53
rd with scores of 77-72-79=228 (+12). Minerva shot 78-72-85=235 (+19) to tie for 75
th place, but he also led the Villanova lineup with nine birdies and an eagle for the weekend. Junior
Noah Peck (Hunt Valley, Md.) rounded out the lineup with scores of 77-81-82=240 (+24).
Senior
Reb Banas (Winnetka, Ill.) and junior
Matt Davis (Newtown Square, Pa.) played as individuals in the tournament. Banas posted scores of 75-73-80=228 (+12) and Davis finished with rounds of 84-73-78=235 (+19).
The five players in the Wildcats lineup combined for 153 pars, 34 birdies and one eagle during the tournament.
Villanova is next in action when it competes in the Ross Collegiate in Pinehurst, N.C. on March 8-9. That tournament is hosted by George Mason and takes place at Mid Pines Inn and Golf Club.
