Men’s Tennis Falls in Second Straight Match, 7-0, to Monmouth

Villanova returns to action against Lehigh on Saturday afternoon

BRYN MAWR, Pa.—Playing indoors in the first of three straight matches this weekend, Villanova (3-4) was dealt a 7-0 loss by Monmouth (4-2) at the Bryn Mawr Racquet Club on Friday morning. The visiting Hawks swept the doubles matches to tally the first point of the day and then won each of the six singles matches in straight sets.

A shuffling of the weekend schedule affords the Wildcats an opportunity to play three matches this weekend, with a road contest at Lehigh and a home outdoor match against Mount St. Mary's on tap over the next two days. Villanova already has one outdoor home match under its belt after it hosted La Salle last weekend, but cold temperatures and a persistent gusty wind forced Friday's match back inside.

Freshman Josh Robinson (Potomac, Md.) and junior Matthew Jones (Dallas, Texas) played the closest of the three doubles matches with a 6-4 loss in the No. 3 spot. It was the first defeat of the season for the pair, who had won four straight doubles matches in the third spot of the lineup entering Friday's competition.

In the top doubles spot sophomores Alex Kim (Cary, N.C.) and Justin Suarez (Manila, Philippines) dropped a 6-0 decision to Max Benaim and Sergio Martinez, while the pairing of sophomore Daniel Cheng (Los Angeles, Calif.) and freshman Noah Winton (Columbia, Mo.) lost 6-1 to Lucca Silva and Victor Castro.

Robinson faced Silva in the No. 2 singles match and lost a close decision. A back-and-forth opening set went to a tiebreaker which Silva won 7-3, and from there he went on to post a 7-6 (3), 6-1 victory. Kim lost to Will Cooke Wharton by a 6-3, 6-0 count in the top singles match. Freshman Eitan Khromchenko (Manalapan, N.J.) lost by set scores of 6-2 and 6-1 to Max Benaim in the No. 3 singles spot.

In the bottom half of the lineup Cheng fell at No. 4 singles (6-2, 6-1) to Castro, freshman Ryan Nguyen (Oakton, Va.) was beaten (6-4, 6-1) by Martinez in the fifth spot and freshman Anthony Prokurat (Manalapan, N.J.) lost (6-3, 6-3) to Gabriel Busato in the No. 6 singles match.

Villanova and Lehigh get underway at 1 p.m. on Saturday, while the Sunday home match versus Mount St. Mary's begins at 12 p.m.
