Villanova, Pa.- The Villanova women's lacrosse team picked up their first conference win of the season on Friday afternoon when they defeated the Marquette Golden Eagles 19-15.
Brittany Bruno started the game off with the opening goal just a minute in on a pass from
Kayla Gulmi, Marquette tied it up, but the Wildcats would take the lead after and hold it for the rest of the game.
Alexa Tsahalis scored at 22:49 and then
Katie Comerford set up Hayley Driscoll for the Wildcats third. Comerford would net her first of the day on a successful free position followed by
Libby McKenna setting up Bruno just over four minutes later to put Villanova up 6-4 with just over 10 minutes to go. The Golden Eagles would score the next goal to be within one but the Wildcats would answer scoring five straight before the end of the half.
Tsahalis started it off followed by a goal from Bruno just over a minute later. The third goal was scored by
Olivia Piccirilli on a pass from McKenna, Tsahlis would pick up her second point of the run when she assisted Bruno for her third goal of the game at 2:43. The final goal of the half was netted at 2:08 by Comerford on a pass from Bruno to put Villanova up 11-5 at the half.
Comerford started the second half off with a goal in the opening minute but the Golden Eagles offense would start to answer back. Shea Garcia and Lydia Foust would score back-to-back goals to make it 12-7 Villanova. Comerford stopped the run when she netted her fifth of the game on a pass from McKenna at 21:28. Marquette would net two more in under a minute and the Wildcats offense answered. Villanova scored two themselves, McKenna set up Comerford again followed by Bruno dishing it to Hayley Driscoll to make it 16-9.
The Golden Eagles would score six in the final 15 minutes while the Wildcats would net two. McKenna scored her second of the game and Bruno her fourth to make the final 19-15.
Comerford's six goals tied her career high.
Alexa Moro got the win in goal for the Wildcats. The junior keeper played all 60 minutes and finished with 12 saves.
Caroline Curnal wone 10 draw controls while
Sydney Frank had five.
Villanova will host Marquette again for the second time this weekend on Sunday. First draw is scheduled for 12:00 P.M.
