VILLANOVA, Pa. – Following one event in the fall, the rest of the rowing schedule was unveiled by Villanova head coach
Carissa Adams and her staff this week. The Wildcats will head off to seven events starting in March before turning their attention to the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championship.
The spring slate keeps the Wildcats in Pennsylvania for four races while they head to Florida, New Jersey and Virginia for the rest of the events.
Spring starts up on March 5 with the Jacksonville Scrimmage in Jacksonville, Fla. before Adams' group gets back to action in Philadelphia on March 19 to face Drexel in head-to-head action. This is the second-straight season that the two teams will face-off to open the season, meeting in scrimmage fashion in 2021.
Each weekend of April will see the 'Cats hit the water for competition, starting with a pair of regattas. The month kicks off with the Murphy Cup on April 2 in Philadelphia, the team's first appearance in the regatta since 2017. A week later, the group heads to Pennsauken, N.J. April 9-10 for the Knecht Cup. The last time the Wildcats raced at the Knecht Cup was in 2018 when it was condensed to a one-day event due to high winds. That day, the 2V8 provided a second-place finish in the petite final, one second out of first.
April 16 takes Villanova down to Lewisburg, Pa. for a four-team contest hosted by Bucknell. The two sides will be joined by Eastern Michigan and UConn. Villanova was scheduled to travel to Bucknell last season but that duel was canceled.
A week later, the Wildcats go to Sandy Run Regional Park, Va. for the George Mason Invitational on April 24. Villanova advanced to the grand finals in all three events during last season's trip to the invitational with four making it back in 2019.
April 30 brings the 'Cats back to Philadelphia for the Kelly Cup. This race has become a traditional event for Villanova over the years, taking on local competition in Penn, Drexel, La Salle, Temple, Saint Joseph's and Jefferson. Last year's showing saw the groups' 1V8 reach the A finals where it finished fourth (7:02.6). The 3V8 boat finished first (7:19.2), 2V8 took third (7:01.3) and the 1V4 boat was fourth (7:59.2).
The CAA Championship is slated for May 16 in Pennsauken, N.J. Villanova finished third in last year's championship after the 2020 season was cut short due to COVID.
