LA JOLLA, Calif.—Villanova had a full day of competition in the Pacific Coast Doubles Championship on Friday at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club. The schedule for the day included matches in each of the first two rounds of the Main Draw as well as two matches played in the Consolation Draw. Two doubles teams for the Wildcats have advanced to the Consolation Draw Round of 16 and will continue play on Saturday morning.
Early on Friday afternoon the team of senior
Matthew Jones (Dallas, Texas) and sophomore
Josh Robinson (Potomac, Md.) lost in a 4-1, 4-2 decision to the San Diego State team of Victor Severo Castro and Johannes Seeman in the Main Draw Round of 128. It was the only loss of the day for Jones and Robinson, who bounced back later and advanced in the Consolation Draw with a 5-4 (4), 4-1 victory over Michael Hao and Ian Habbestad from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
After a bye in the Consolation Draw Round of 32, a matchup in the round of 16 against the Boston College pair of Bennett Turner and Oliver Worth awaits Jones and Robinson on Saturday morning. They will be in action along with the junior duo of
Alex Kim (Cary, N.C.) and
Justin Suarez (Manila, Philippines). Kim and Suarez fell to Roman Shenkiryk and Andrew Whitehouse in a 4-2, 5-3 contest in the Main Draw. Shenkiryk and Whitehouse are recent Cal Poly graduates, while Kim and Suarez will now move on to the Consolation Draw where they have byes in each of the first two rounds.
Two teams of Villanova players were competing in the Main Draw Round of 64 on Friday after winning their opening matches a day earlier. Junior
Will Gatti (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and sophomore
Ryan Nguyen (Oakton, Va.) were blanked (4-0, 4-0) by the team of Marco Alvarez and Matthew Rowe. A team of Southern California players, Bradley Frye and Ryan Colby, held off senior
Collin Klumb (Leawood, Kan.) and sophomore
Noah Winton (Columbia, Mo.) with a 4-2, 4-1 victory.
The other match played by Wildcats on Friday afternoon was in the first round of the Consolation Draw where freshman
Trey Fourticq (Los Angeles, Calif.) and sophomore
Anthony Prokurat (Manalapan, N.J.) were narrowly defeated in a 5-3, 5-4 (4) loss to the San Diego Christian College team of Robin Van Den Hoek and Laurenz Grabia.
