Ally Jones Named to Weekly BIG EAST Honor Roll

Junior catcher hit four home runs over six games last week

NEW YORK—Junior catcher Ally Jones (Brielle, N.J.) was named to the weekly BIG EAST Honor Roll in an announcement made by the conference office on Monday afternoon. The first weekly honor of the season for Jones comes on the heels of a monster week in which she hit four home runs in a six-game span and had a 1.053 slugging percentage over 19 plate appearances. Villanova has earned at least one weekly accolade from the BIG EAST in three of the first four weeks of the 2022 season and, going back further, has been recognized in 29 of the past 33 weeks dating back to the start of the 2019 season.

Jones batted .368 (7-for-19) with a double, four home runs, five runs scored, and seven runs batted in over six games during the period from February 28-March 6. Her best outing came in an 8-7 win over Maryland on Saturday afternoon in which she had a double and two home runs, including a solo homer to get the Wildcats on the board and later a game-tying three-run shot as Villanova twice rallied from deficits of at least three runs (4-0 and 7-4) to defeat the Terrapins for the first time in 10 tries.

With her two home runs against Maryland, Jones also became the sixth player in school history to have at least two career multi-homer games. She also had 10 total bases in the contest with her double and the two long balls. It was the eighth such game in Wildcats history in which a batter had at least 10 total bases in a game. Of the eight instances, Jones joins Varsity Club Hall of Fame inductee Sandy Arena as the only players to accomplish the feat on multiple occasions.

In addition to help leading Villanova to the win over Maryland this past Saturday, Jones also opened the scoring with solo home runs in games against North Carolina on Tuesday evening and versus Boston College on Sunday morning. In the final two games of the weekend alone against the Terrapins and the Eagles, Jones was 5-for-7 at the plate with four runs scored, five RBI, a double, a walk and three home runs.

Jones also played flawless defense behind the plate over the past week and totaled 25 putouts with three assists for the week. All three of her assists came on throwing out would-be base stealers, and for the season Jones has now caught 38.9 percent (7-of-18) of runners attempting to steal. Over a full season that percentage would be the best mark by any Wildcats catcher ever.

This week is the second time in Jones' career that she has been a weekly BIG EAST honoree. Last season she was named to the Honor Roll on April 12 and went on to be a second team All-BIG EAST and second team NFCA Mideast All-Region honoree for the year.

Since the beginning of the 2019 season Villanova has earned a combined 21 Player/Pitcher/Rookie of the Week accolades from the BIG EAST in addition to 23 weekly honor roll selections.
