Sean Dolan and Haftu Strintzos Named All-Americans for the 2022 Outdoor Track & Field Season

Villanova duo each competed at the NCAA Championships last week

NEW ORLEANS—Sophomore middle distance runner Sean Dolan (Pennington, N.J.) and senior distance runner Haftu Strintzos (Melbourne, Australia) were officially named All-Americans for the outdoor track & field season in an announcement by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Monday afternoon. Dolan was a first team All-American in the 800 meters and Strintzos earned honorable mention All-America accolades in the 10000 meters. The pair of athletes each represented Villanova at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. last week.

This is the third straight outdoor season in which the Wildcats have had multiple All-Americans coming out of the national championships. Dolan scored four team points for Villanova at least week's NCAA meet, making this the 58th time in the last 76 years that the Wildcats have scored at the outdoor NCAA Championships. It is the 48th time out of those 58 years that Villanova has tallied four or more points at the meet.

Dolan earns the third All-America honor of his career and his first for the outdoor season after a fifth place finish in the final of the 800 meters last week. He ran to a lifetime best mark of 1:46.38 in the championship race after coming in second in his semifinal heat in 1:46.96 earlier in the week. Dolan was an automatic qualifier through every national round of the 800 meters, including the first round and quarterfinal heats at the NCAA East Preliminary last month as well as the semifinal round earlier during the NCAA Championships competition. He closed out the outdoor campaign by lowering his season best time in every one of his races during the year.

The fifth place finish for Dolan at the NCAA Championships is the best by a Wildcats athlete outdoors in the 800 meters in 29 years since Brad Sumner came in fourth in consecutive seasons in 1992 and 1993. Prior to the NCAA Championships, Dolan won the BIG EAST title in the 800 meters with a winning time of 1:48.07 in the final. He anchored both the distance medley relay and the 4xMile relay at the Penn Relays earlier in the season. Dolan began the outdoor campaign with three straight strong races in the 1500 meters at the Sam Howell Invitational, the Larry Ellis Invitational and the Virginia Challenge. His times included the metric equivalent of a sub-four minute mile in Virginia when he came in fourth in the invitational section of the 1500 meters in 3:41.86.

Strintzos has qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 10000 meters in each of the last two years, and in each of his races at the national meet he has recorded the lowest time ever by a Villanova runner in the history of the meet. In last week's championship race Strintzos finished 19th overall with a time of 28:47.35. He placed in the same spot as he did at last year's NCAA meet while lowering his time from 2021 (28:51.06) by nearly four seconds. Strintzos qualified for the national championships by finishing seventh in the semifinal round with a time of 28:42.13 at the NCAA East Preliminary two weeks earlier. The only other Wildcats athlete to be a two-time All-American in the 10000 meters is Terrence Mahon who earned the honor for both the 1991 and 1993 seasons.

In addition to his success on the national level, Strintzos won the second individual BIG EAST title of his career when he finished first in the 5000 meters at the conference meet on May 14. He won with a time of 14:13.58 and added his first career conference gold medal on the track after previously being the BIG EAST cross country champion for the 2020 season. Strintzos opened this year's outdoor campaign with a time of 13:51.28 in the 5K and then went on to record a personal best mark of 28:34.41 in the invitational section of the 10000 meters at the Virginia Challenge. He now holds six of the 12 fastest time in school history in the 10000 meters, three of which were recorded this season.

Villanova first qualified athletes for the outdoor NCAA Championships in 1947 and since then has had a total of 157 athletes in 307 events combine for a total of 457 All-America honors for the outdoor track & field season.
