Villanova Duo Earn Preseason All-America Recognition from USA Lacrosse Magazine

Matt Campbell is a first team selection and Chet Comizio named honorable mention

VILLANOVA, Pa.—Graduate student midfielders Matt Campbell (Madison, N.J.) and Chet Comizio (Basking Ridge, N.J.) were each named 2023 USA Lacrosse Magazine Division I Men's Preseason All-Americans in an announcement made on Tuesday morning. The pair of honors come as both players are set to begin their fifth season with the Wildcats next month. Campbell was named to the preseason All-America first team and Comizio garnered honorable mention recognition.

With just over a month until Villanova hosts its season opener against Penn State on February 12, preseason accolades are starting to roll in for a Wildcats team which is coming off its first BIG EAST championship game appearance in eight years last Spring. Campbell and Comizio are each returning All-Americans for Villanova, with Campbell already being named a "Top 50 Men's Player for 2023" (No. 25) by Inside Lacrosse in advance of the 2023 campaign.

Campbell enters the season ranked fifth in school history in career goals scored (117) and is tied for sixth in the Wildcats record book in points (168). He is a veteran of 49 games played during his collegiate career and led Villanova in goals (45) and points (67) last season while ranking second on the team with 22 assists. He was named a first team All-America selection by USA Lacrosse Magazine last year in addition to being a second team selection by the USILA and Inside Lacrosse.

Comizio is a preseason All-American after he netted third team honors from Inside Lacrosse and honorable mention status from USA Lacrosse Magazine and the USILA a year ago. The short-stick defensive midfielder ranks on the Wildcats all-time top-10 list in career caused turnovers (41) and had a team-high 24 last season to go along with 49 ground balls. Comizio has appeared in 49 career games and his career totals include the 41 caused turnovers, 93 ground balls, two goals and three assists. He was a second team All-BIG EAST selection last season.

Villanova went 9-5 last season and 3-2 in BIG EAST action to earn the #3 seed in the BIG EAST Championship. After tallying a last-minute win over #2 seed Denver in the conference semifinals, the Wildcats were narrowly defeated by top-seeded Georgetown on the Hoyas home field in the championship game. Head coach Mike Corrado and his staff welcome back 32 players from last year's team in 2023, including a trio of All-BIG EAST returnees in Campbell, Comizio and senior faceoff specialist Justin Coppola (Garden City, N.Y.).
