Matt Campbell and Chet Comizio Recognized by Inside Lacrosse as Preseason Media All-Americans

VILLANOVA, Pa.—Another set of preseason honors have been bestowed on Villanova graduate students Matt Campbell (Madison, N.J.) and Chet Comizio (Basking Ridge, N.J.) in advance of the 2023 campaign beginning next month. On Wednesday afternoon Inside Lacrosse announced its Preseason Media All-Americans which featured Campbell on the first team and Comizio on the third team. The pair had previously been announced as USA Lacrosse Magazine Preseason All-Americans earlier this month and were named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team yesterday.

Wednesday's honors from Inside Lacrosse were voted on by members of the media who vote weekly in the IL Media Poll. Eighteen voters picked at least three teams worth of candidates; the votes were tallied, and remaining players who received a mass of votes were compiled in alphabetical order for the honorable mention team.

Campbell enters the year ranked fifth in school history in career goals scored (117) and is tied for sixth in the Villanova record book in points (168). He is a veteran of 49 games played during his collegiate career and led the Wildcats in goals (45) and points (67) last season while ranking second on the team with 22 assists. He was named a first team All-America selection by USA Lacrosse Magazine in addition to being a second team selection by USILA and Inside Lacrosse.

Comizio is a short-stick defensive midfielder and was recognized as a third team All-American last year by Inside Lacrosse in addition to earning honorable mention status from USA Lacrosse Magazine and the USILA. He ranks on the Villanova all-time top-10 list in career caused turnovers (41) and had a team-high 24 last season to go along with 49 ground balls. Comizio has appeared in 49 games for the Wildcats and his career totals include the 41 caused turnovers, 93 ground balls, two goals and three assists. He was a second team All-BIG EAST honoree last year.

Villanova is coming off a strong 2022 campaign in which it recorded a winning record for the seventh consecutive season, including the fourth time in that span winning at least nine games. Head coach Mike Corrado  guided the Wildcats to a 9-5 record last year and the program's first appearance in the BIG EAST championship game in eight years. Villanova went 3-2 in regular season conference action a year ago and earned the #3 seed in the BIG EAST Championship before tallying a last-minute win over #2 seed Denver in the conference semifinals.

Corrado and his coaching staff welcome back 32 student-athletes from last year's team, including a trio of 2022 all-conference performers in Campbell, Comizio and senior faceoff specialist Justin Coppola. Villanova received votes in the IL Men's Division I Preseason Rankings earlier this week. The team began preseason training in earnest on January 17 and is preparing for its season opener on February 12 at home against Penn State.
