Men’s Tennis Falls to Navy, 6-1, in First Match of Day

Villanova takes on Fairleigh Dickinson in a neutral site match later on Saturday afternoon

ANNAPOLIS, Md.—Sophomore Trey Fourticq (Los Angeles, Calif.) won a thriller in his match at No. 5 singles to account for the lone Villanova (3-4) point in a 6-1 loss to Navy (9-10) at the Tose Family Tennis Center on Saturday morning. The match was the first of two on the day for the Wildcats, who will be back in action later on Saturday to take on Fairleigh Dickinson in a match played at the Navy venue.
 
Fourticq faced Christian Pumpelly in the No. 5 singles match and won a tiebreaker after the two players split the first two sets. The first set went to Pumpelly in a 7-6 (5) decision before Fourticq rallied to win the second set 6-3 and the tiebreaker by a 10-4 count. The match was the only one in the singles competitions to advance to a third set tiebreaker.
 
Villanova played close matches throughout the singles lineup. Junior Eitan Khromchenko (Manalapan, N.J.) took on Nicholas Nguyen at the No. 4 spot and was narrowly defeated in a 7-6 (2), 7-5 decision. Junior Ryan Nguyen (Oakton, Va.) fell to Luke Garner (6-3, 6-4) at No. 3 singles and sophomore Lukas Choi (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) lost to Nathan Nguyen in the No. 6 match by set scores of 6-0 and 6-3.
 
At the top of the lineup freshman Tighe Brunetti (Westport, Conn.) was defeated by Sasha Panyan in a 6-4, 6-2 decision. Freshman Cooper Gordon (Milton, Ga.) lost to Gavin Segraves at No. 2 singles by scores of 6-0 and 6-2.
 
The match began with doubles competition in which the Midshipmen took two of the three matches. Garner and Panyan defeated junior Josh Robinson (Potomac, Md.) and junior Noah Winton (Columbia, Mo.) at No. 1 doubles (6-0), while Brunetti and Fourticq were victorous to Pumpelly and Segraves in the No. 2 spot (6-0). The No. 3 doubles match saw Choi and senior Justin Suarez (Manila, Philippines) fall to Nathan Nguyen and Nicholas Nguyen by a 6-1 score which secured the Navy team point.
 
Villanova's match against FDU is set to get underway at 4 p.m.
