VILLANOVA, Pa.—Fifth year midfielder
Matt Campbell (Madison, N.J.) became the third player in school history to reach the milestone of 200 career points and he did so by tying a career single-game high of eight points to lead No. 7 Villanova (7-1) to a 17-6 victory over Navy (3-6) on Tuesday afternoon. Campbell had two goals and a career-high six assists, fifth year attackman
Patrick Daly (Shrewsbury, Mass.) scored a season high five goals and the Wildcats extended their winning streak to six in their first home game in over a month.
Daly recorded at least a hat trick for the seventh time in eight games this season and was one of four Villanova players to score two or more goals. Fifth year midfielder
Austin Fraser (Corltandt Manor, N.Y.) and junior attackman
Matt Licata (Sandown, N.H.) had three goals apiece and eight different players scored overall. Sophomore
Tucker Milhous (Villanova, Pa.) scored his first collegiate goal with 3:19 remaining in the contest to close the Wildcats scoring for the day.
The six assists by Campbell mark the second time this season and the seventh time in school history that a Villanova player has had six or more assists in a game. Campbell's fourth assist of the day with 10:44 to play in the third quarter was the 200
th point of his career, joining him with
Rick Bontatibus (1991-94) and
Chris Sullivan (1988-91) as the only players to reach 200 points during their Wildcats careers. Bontatibus is the program's career record holder with 213 points and Sullivan is second in school history with 205.
Earlier this season Campbell broke the Villanova career record for goals scored earlier this season, eclipsing the mark that Sullivan shared with
Jack Rice (2010-13). With nearly half the regular season still remaining, Campbell's current career totals stand at 138 goals, 66 assists and 204 points. He moved into the top 10 in school history for career assists during Tuesday's game.
After the visiting Midshipmen scored the first goal of the game with 12:11 to play in the first quarter, the Wildcats used another one of their big scoring runs to take control of the game. Villanova scored seven unanswered goals in a span of less than eight minutes and held Navy scoreless for nearly 30 minutes while building a commanding 7-1 lead. The stretch of seven unanswered goals made Tuesday's game the fourth time in the last five outings that the Wildcats have scored at least seven straight goals.
Fraser got Villanova on the board at the 6:47 mark of the opening period and the Wildcats took the lead just eight seconds later on a highlight reel goal from senior faceoff specialist
Justin Coppola (Garden City, N.Y.). On the faceoff following the Fraser goal, Coppola quickly picked up the ball and raced downfield where he got off a diving shot that just found its way into the back of the net. It was the first goal of the season fifth career tally for Coppola, who has won 56 percent of his faceoff this season and leads the team with 58 ground balls.
Three of the game's next five goals were scored by Daly, who had a hat trick by the 13:57 mark of the second quarter. He scored with 2:03 left in the first quarter and again with 24 seconds remaining in the period. Villanova was in peak form by that point of the game and put four tallies on the board in the final 2:03 of the opening quarter. Daly's goal at the 2:03 mark was followed by a Fraser score with 1:21 to play, another Daly goal with 24 seconds left and a quick strike by senior midfielder
Mason Reale (Westport, Conn.) with just three seconds to go.
Jon Jarosz scored his second goal of the game for the Midshipmen with 12:45 to play in the third quarter and trim the Wildcats lead to 7-2, but Villanova pushed the margin to 11-2 by the end of the stanza and scored five goals in a span of less than six minutes during the fourth quarter to extend the advantage. Jarosz tallied a hat trick for Navy while Tommy Hovivian and Jeff Lachenmeyer each had a goal and an assist. The game was perhaps surprisingly the first meeting between the teams who are separated by less than three hours and each have a long track record of success.
The efficiency of the Wildcats offense reached a nearly startling pace at times, as Villanova scored goals within 30 seconds of each other three different times during the contest. Early in the third period Licata collected a pass from Campbell and scored his first goal of the game with 10:54 to play in the quarter. They replicated the same play just 10 seconds later after Coppola won the faceoff and Licata scored again at the 10:44 mark. Campbell and sophomore
Luke Raymond (Crownsville, Md.) scored man-up goals just over a minute apart in the fourth quarter; the latter goal came on Campbell's sixth assist of the game. Coppola finished the day 13-of-19 (.684) at the X.
Fifth year goalie
Will Vitton (Summit, N.J.) shared netminding duties with senior
Justin Clark (Rockville, Md.) in the win. Vitton played the first 56:26 and allowed four goals while making 11 saves. It is the fourth straight game and sixth time this season that Vitton has made 10+ saves. He tallied his 33
rd career victory and moved to within two saves of reaching the 600 milestone for his career. Vitton also needs just one more win to tie the Villanova career record of 34 held by
Joe Canuso (2003-06). Over his last five games played Vitton owns a 6.58 goals-against average and a .624 save percentage while averaging 10.6 saves per contest.
After playing consecutive Sunday afternoon home games to begin the 2023 season, the Wildcats had played five straight games at road and neutral sites over the past month. Villanova started a three-game homestand with Tuesday's contest and will next host Brown on Monday afternoon (March 27) at 3 p.m.
