TOWSON, Md. – Kat Gallant threw a complete game three-hitter for Villanova (15-13, 5-1 BIG EAST) in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader, leading the Wildcats to a 6-0 victory over the Tigers.
The freshman right-hander struck out six and allowed no walks, quieting Towson's lineup as the 'Cats swept the Tigers in Maryland.
After a slow start for the Villanova bats, it became a home run derby as Ryan Henry, Kelsey White and Ava Franz all blasted dingers across the fifth and sixth innings to provide all the offense VU needed.
Ally Jones led the Wildcats with three hits in the game, part of six base knocks on the day for the senior catcher, and Chloe Smith crossed the plate twice to lead either side.
Henry got the hitting started for either squad as she knocked a two-out double into right center field in the second inning and Towson got its first base hit in the third frame with a single up the middle, though the game remained scoreless.
Both sides recorded their second hit in the fourth stanza, as Jones totaled her fourth hit of the day with a two-out base knock and the Tigers began their hacks with a leadoff double. Despite those baserunners, the score stayed at 0-0.
The Wildcats' bats woke up in the fifth inning, with Henry crushing a home run to center field to get the scoring started. Lilly St. Jean followed that up with a double, then Victoria Sebastian and Tess Cites both put a good piece on the ball, but Towson's center fielder got under both and VU's lead stayed at 1-0.
Smith was hit by a pitch to begin the sixth and the ensuing batter White took advantage, blasting the first pitch of her at bat for a no-doubt bomb. After Jones followed that with a single, Franz began her AB with a second straight two-run jack, putting the Wildcats up 5-0.
Four straight batters reached base in the seventh for Villanova, although two were fielder's choices that brought two outs. With Smith on second and White on first, Jones laced a ball into right center to score a run and bring the edge to 6-0.
Gallant gave up a leadoff single to start the final frame, but the runner could not move forward as the freshman forced a popout, strikeout and another popout in succession to move the 'Cats two games above .500.
UP NEXT: The Wildcats will remain in the Mid-Atlantic, heading to Newark, Delaware, for a doubleheader on Saturday against the Blue Hens and Boston University.
